I'm currently using them at a write speed of x8 (of x16 write speed) and when I play I notice load times are a little long and I can hear my Wii "sputtering" to read the disc. Should I write it at a lower speed or what, or is this normal?

That's pretty normal sound. I've been playing pretty much exclusively burnt disks on my Wii since April 2007 and it's still reading and loading them fine. You should burn at the "native" speed of your drive. Slower burn does not equal a better burn.

    simple answer.

when you put a disk in the drive sets the power of the laser so it see's a good reflection from the disk.

so a good pressed disk will use the least power.
    then +/-R's
    then R/W's

if your disks are scratched, dirty, or just plain shit then the laser will be pumped harder to make up for it.
obviously the harder you work it, the faster it dies.

try to use TY's (Tayo-Uden) - they are the best blanks in the world.
