Damn dude, I just sold 2 diff 4TB drives on Ebay for $95. Check there, there was a big sale on seagate 4TB drives, that only a handful of people got before they pulled it. And so those drives went up on ebay undercutting everyone, yet still giving the seller profit. May as well get the most for your money.

2.5" Portable HDD's work fine. However Wii U doesn't provide enough power from a single USB Port to power the HDD. To fix this you need to get a USB Y Cable, So that the HDD is able to draw power from two USB Ports. You can also use an external AC Adapter to power the HDD as well, but only if the drive has connector for it.

I use a Western Digital 500GB 2.5" Portable HDD with USB Y Cable and have had zero issues with it.

Yup. It does. This is a picture of my Wii U. I have the HDD attached to my Wii U with double sided tape and then you can see the USB Y Cable I'm using to provide enough power to the drive. Also the max size HDD you will want to get is 2TB.
