My guess is no, new wiis don't have the capability to run DVDX anymore, you can run wii backups on USB though, that's about it

New drives don't read burnt discs.

The "that's about it" is a bit of an understatement. Every homebrew works from USB, loading games is faster and you don't have to rely on the part of the wii that is most likely to break first. Heck...I have an old drive and very rarely use it for anything nowadays.

For gamecube games...you'll need an extra bit of hardware for it. Swiss is the cheap solution (with an SD gecko for as little as 5 bucks you can load these games from SD card) or a WODE hardmod if you want to run them from USB as well.
Or you can buy an older drive...but I think it'll be more expensive than a SD gecko.

As of now, it can't be done. Well, it can using an old proof of concept app, which allows you to run GC games from your PC. However, it is extremely slow. USB Gecko's aren't cheap either. Just use the retail discs.

It's really not worth it. Either get retail discs or a WODE or a modded GameCube console.

if it is'nt too much bother, you could get a used gamecube system for like 20 bucks, rather than f**k with the wii.....
Sorry, if backups then get an older wii console that reads discs..........

i guess its possible to be done, but it would be extremely complicated. if someone can dump the drive firmware, hack it, then write it back its possible but I am pretty sure you would have to desolder the chip and mount it on a pc.

in other words...no. you cannot play burned discs on a newer wii. this is for your own good anyway. buy a hdd. they are less than $100. save $20 a week for 5 weeks, then you will be good to go.

Contrary to what most people believe, the answer is actually yes.

You can replace the D3-2 PCB with an older one (DMS/D2A/D2B/D2C/D2E) and gain the ability to played backups on a new Wii.

    Here's a link if you're interested

Actually, no. Nobody has brought more info to the table.

Btw, just about everybody knows you can replace the drive chip. I don't know why you thought it is common belief that it's not possible. Take a look at the third response.
