So I will be purchasing the new 3ds xl in a week and a flashcart to go with it, however im not sure which flashcart to get between the sky3ds and gateway flashcarts, both are $75 USD to purchase here from canada. I want to be able to play online with out getting banned, also from what I understand the n3dsxl ships with firmware 9.0 (may have changed since). So if I get sky3ds i have to use a private header for online right? How about for gateway? Which of the two are less likely to get me banned for playing online (games like pokemon, smash, fire emblem, etc)?

Gateway + .cia files. Less headaches.

Thanks for the responses! I don't order my DS for a bit how ever when I do I will get it with in a day (Amazon prime) however the flashcart will take some time to arrive. Should I order the gateway now? Or wait and see what firmware my D's will arrive with? From what I've seen most people got theirs with 9.0 but anything could happen so I'm not too sure.

Ensure you have a N3DS with 9.2 firmware or less before ordering the Gateway; you don't want to have a flashcart sitting there you can't use! Although many people (myself included) have gotten an N3DS with 9.2 or less, there are also many people who weren't as lucky and ended up with 9.4+. We have a list of reported N3DS serials and their firmwares here: http://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/

You should wait until you receive your n3DS, which one did you order anyways? Because that plays an important role, for example the Monster Hunter ones came with 9.2 I think, the red ones came with another firmware, the Zelda ones (first batch) came with 9.0, I just ordered 2 from Japan and one both came with the same firmware (same models) so that explains

Gateway can only work on under 9.2, and need Cubic Ninja to make it work on New 3ds, but SKY3DS can work on the newest 9.7 with very simple operation like the game card, just put it in then enjoy the game.
    Why not SKY3DS?

I got the black one, I feel I maybe unfortunate enough to land a 9.4 one since its from amazon. But it is also the Canadian Amazon so there's also a good chance that not a lot of people have bought it and there still a lot of 9.0 n3ds. Well here's hoping because I will be stuck waiting for a 9.4 update for gateway then, decided I wouldn't bother with the sky3ds.

You need to add a third option to your poll: -BOTH- It never hurts...

    Gateway 3DS, FTW.

Sky3DS if you F-up your sysNAND past 9.2. Or if you want to have a sharable flashcart for friends, get the Sky3DS as well. Sky3DS can also be used to run CN and ZOOT for installing GW onto N3DSXL.

You might also want to consider a cheaper method of Cubic Ninja retail cart. You'll need it. Or if you have a Zelda OOT that works as well.

    BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP

    When in doubt, backitup.

I want to spend as little money as I have to, I am university student who is tight on cash hah. So I would prefer to only get one.

Sky3DS can also be used to run CN and ZOOT for installing GW onto N3DSXL.

Im still a newb hah, mind explaining what that is?

edit: Oh nvm, i think i understand now, you need zoot or cn (didnt know what these were at first, then i realized you were referring to the games you need to install gateway) for gateway, and you were saying that I could use the sky3ds for that purpose right?

I got my n3ds xl today, it came as version 9.0.0-20u, which means gateway is a option! However do I need cubic ninja or zelda orcarina of time? Does it have to be cartridge or can I get it over eshop or something? What are my options here?

Your ONLY options are either getting Cubic Ninja or Zelda OoT OR Sky3DS. Any ONE of these two options is necessary for booting into Gateway.

The cheapest option would be getting Cubic Ninja + Gateway and am saying this because HOPEFULLY you'll find a Cubic Ninja copy for around $30. I would avoid Zelda OoT because not all versions of Zelda OoT work. Cubic Ninja works 100%.

If you think getting Cubic Ninja + Gateway is COSTLIER THAN getting Sky3DS, then get Sky3DS :) BUT Gateway provides a WHOLE LOT of features that Sky3DS doesn't provide and is TOTALLY WORTH the little extra you would be spending.

Also, THE ONLY REASON we are recommending Sky3DS instead of Cubic Ninja/OoT is because you can use Sky3DS with Cubic Ninja/OoT rom to boot into Gateway IF you can't find a cheap copy of Cubic Ninja.

I hope you understand the situation :) Let us know if you have any more questions :)

I guess i might have to give away a few limbs and get both sky3ds and gateway D:

What extra feature does the gateway have? If less likely to get banned when playing online is one of them I'll pay the extra :P

Well, to tell you the truth NOBODY can tell you the exact reason why anyone got banned but we're just assuming that it's mostly due to using the same public header a publicly available rom has. Because of this reason, it is ASSUMED that it is MUCH MUCH safer to just use the .CIA version of the game (eshop version) since they don't have the header problem, and this feature is ONLY AVAILABLE with the Gateway card :)

Why don't you try getting a Cubic Ninja? Make sure you're getting the same region Cubic Ninja as your 3DS. If you do, it would certainly (hopefully) be cheaper than Sky3DS.

I live in canada, it's literally like $60 to get here, unless i wait like 1-2 months and order on ebay. I might as well spend the $20 more and get a sky3ds. So how do .cia files work, and how can I obtain them?

.CIA are installation packages. Usually, .3ds roms go on the Gateway MicroSD card and you use the multirom menu to shuffle between .3DS roms, but .cia can be installed on your 3DS Micro SD, and after installation, the game will show up as an "installed game" in your 3DS.

With Gateway, you can also install game updates and DLC's as .CIA and then play those games online :)

    Check PM :)

Gateway requires cubic ninja or oot every time you power off the console
