Well, i recently bought a Wii. Woo...yay... *cough* I should chip that thing...

Anyhow, onto point. I was thinking of getting a Xbox360 . I am a bit of...well i never liked Xbox360 in the first place. But, it's been a while now and couple games came out and such and etc.
What i wanna know is, what to get and what not to get. Course ima chip it or get that custom firmware. Which comes to my question.
Excatly what does this firmware do? Does it allow me to play games straight of the console instead of a cd or does it allow booting from a burned cd?

So you don't like the 360 but you don't have a reason...

You don't use chips on the 360 you flash the firmware of the DVDdrive. Once the firmware is flashed you can boot burnt games on DL DVD's.

What to get? Get the Pro version so you have a HDD and HD cable. You may want to wait until the new Pro pack comes out with the 60GB HDD but it's up to you.

Well, i did have a reason... but meh. Whatever history now.
Hm, sounds easy enough. I don't have a HD tv tough, but i plan on getting on later. And i gotta kinda tight of cash, but enough to get a avarge version.

The newest models probably don't have flashable drives, you'll have to track down one that is a couple of months old.

Good point fischju.

The other option if you don't care about HD cables in the short term is to buy an older arcade model pack that has a HDMI slot. Then you buy a separate HDD from ebay or somewhere else.

Then later when you get your HDTV you can buy a HDMI cable for HD.

Yes get a 360... but I won't support chipping it, only because I love my Xbox Live... also there's too much consern with getting the Red Ring of Death, and if it's chipped the warranty is void. I'm going on to my 4th (!!!) Xbox 360 (since launch), all under warranty... and yes even after 3 dead Xbox 360's, I still know I made the right choice with going with and sticking with the Xbox 360 platform.

There is a shop that does flashing services and such, was planning on getting it from there.
They have warranty for that Red ring of death service actully even tough your Xbox 360 is chipped or not.

Yeah, but you should wait for the 60 GB, why?:
Used to be:
Pro- 20 GB for $350.

Now:
Pro(OLD) 20GB for $300($50 off, wont be made again. Just, until its sold out.)
Pro(NEW, Releasing on August 1st)~ $350. 60GB, new model.

Wait a minute, so the Pro 20GB for $300 is still flashable right? I was planning on getting one on Sunday.

Some are , some aren't. Newer units have the lite-on in which you can't flash , older ones will have the benq in , which you can. So it just depends if you can find one with a benq in or not.

Just to be sure, Lite On drives will NEVER be able to be flashed, right? Because Im gonna purchase a 360 soon, and I think Id rather have a flashed 20Gb than a nonflashed 60Gb, seeing as I cant afford games at 60 bucks a pop. >/

You can never say never, but it's clear they took precautions against flashing in the LiteOn drive. And about the question: buy it. Reasonable price, great games. Th eonly downside is it's a Microsoft product.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
