So many people having trouble soldering wii, so i was wondering what everyone's success rate was with all the pads lifting, circuit boards burning.

i remember my first Mod job was a PS1, someone hid the good soldering iron so i was forced to use a soldering gun (quite dumb) , it blew my resistor up [IMG] like in 4 sec. it stilled played but it wouldnt play some games like Final Fantasy.

There should be a 'not quite so easily modded but got it ok' option - I would have picked that.
I had to grind my iron tip down to a sharp point using a dremel to get those small pads.

Xbox was really easy, PS2 was crazy hard. A friend destroyed his PS2 trying to mod but Xbox was really easy. I was there helping.

Don't forget 1st-gen Xbox modchips at 29 wires, and soldering directly to BIOS pins on some PS2s [IMG]

PLEASE don't make the Wii your first soldering project! Practice on some old PCBs first!

hardest i did so far is indeed the ps2, the point where you have to solder a wire on a resistor and those tiny bios pad. modded 3 ps2, and one of them acts weird, shake it and mod chip disables, shake it again and mod chip enables lol prob loose connection somewhere but i'm too lazy to find out before it fails.

i agree dont use your wii to learn how to solder, i always thought learn to solder kits were really nice if you wanted to improve your soldering skills or learn.

My dad had 2 soldering kits laying around and this was my first time soldering so I did them first. It helps a lot.

I really want to Chip my wii at some point in the future, but I'm quite worried about the soldering despite having taken GCSE electronics (though i did spend the a lot of the time making solder balls).

My brother is a wiz at it...
He said that the PS2 was the hardest he's done.
Had to have a really fine tip to do that one.
I might have to order a Wii chip and tell him to do that for me! [IMG]

Wii's a doddle to mod. The worst mod I had to do were the philips C25 mobile phones for free calls (years ago)(BT U.K.) now they were small solder points. PS2 was a bit of a pig first few times too.

If your not sure about your soldering skills dig out an old cd rom drive and some kynar wire and practice on that and unless you have lots of experience never go above a 15W iron with a 0.5 (or 1mm at a push ) tip. 0.5 mm solder,Clean your tip after every joint you solder on a piece of damp sponge. by the time you've spent half hour on the cdrom board you'll be ready for your Wii. & if your eyesight is getting old like mine. [IMG] use one of those table lights with a magnifier built in. Even with years of electronics experience a PS2 warrants my magnifier. Like I said my eyes are getting old [IMG]

I've been considering modding my wii with the wiikey, using quick solder. I guess i need to practice though, having no soldering experience. how easy is it to brick your wii with an attempt?

hmm... i would consider that but it would seem expensive to do that and if another modchip comes around then i would have to pay another 55 to have them upgrade. [IMG]
