Yeah I've been trying that, but it's harder than you might think. The connector is so rigid and precision engineered that you have to get the exact right thickness, to a fraction of a millimetre. Too thin and it will fall out, too thick and you can't jam it in at all. I guess that's why they have the fold down flap, which pushes down and clicks in place! No, the noise is with originals too, and is when the disc is spinning. If you google or youtube for it, it's quite common, and there are various fixes mentioned, including bending bits of metal, but they haven't worked for me. The drive is on its way to the electronics recycling bin as I type.
If you want a good system to port it to, at least have a good programmer and knowledge.

It's very sad and a poignant example of why preservation is so important.

I didn't know they made an MSU cart for the Genesis.... I knew about the SNES one and the library for that is rather large but the Genesis one has very few games

, Wonder if there are Super FX repro carts too, no?

An FPGA could probably replicate the chip's functionality without buying donor parts.

But I bet that would be more for a flashcart than a consumer repro board.

Like not emulating the entire SNES but just a loader and the enhancement chips perhaps even slightly overclocked like FX-2

In emulation overclocked FX chips makes a pretty big difference in frame rate
