Something tells me the server software update changed them, and that it was unintentional.

I think the new ones are better, as it's easier to tell at first glance a new/noob member (who usually use the default avatars) from a longer time member (who would have their own avatar) since the new ones are grey, instead of colourful.

The old ones were nicer-looking though.

Once someone cares enough to make a choice, they'll probably be uploading their own avatar though.

Maybe. I only chose/edited this because I couldn't think of a better avatar. And it reminds me of those '90's McDonald's commercials. Otherwise, I would have kept the default avatar. I liked how plain it looked. The newer default avatar wasn't my style. Maybe it's good for some, but not me.

Maybe gbatemp should have another contest: create 3-8 new default avatars and win a Nintendo Switch game. The game would be 1-2 Switch. Because you helped the temp Switch avatars.

I think they meant like the all users can choose which avatar shows as default for users without avatars
