If you mess something while flashing your DS (very hard to mess up), your DS will no longer turn on. If it doesn't turn on, it can't play any games or do any other of the features that it was designed to do, so it basically just takes space without anything in return. It essentially becomes a shiny, Nintendo branded brick.

Your DS can also become bricked if you use an infected rom/homebrew app.
