I just got a second hand HP pavilion dv5 with Windows vista on it. It had no battery but I though I could just use it plugged in. I turned It on the first time and it was working opened Chrome and was gong to change the users but then I realized that half of the keys on the keyboard didn't work. I plugged in a mouse and keyboard and tried it out in Word. Then I finally shut it down. When I tried to turn it on again It started beeping loudly on the HP splash screen until I turned it off. I tried to remove the f1 key that had no spring and was pressing down but it was still beeping. Sometimes it tries to boot but it suddenly turns off and tries again. I have no knowlage about computers so that's why I'm posting here.
Any way to get it working again?
    Thanks a lot.

    why
the amount of times it beeps in a row usually signifies what error it has

I shut it down normaly. I turned it on again without the mouse and keyboard too.

So it beeps more than 26 times and then stars getting a bit slower and then does a breif pause. It doesn't stop beeping.

Ok now It's not showing anything or beeping now when I removed both ram cards. It's on a black screen.
PS: I may have turned off wireless funcionality right when it was turning off. I was tapping the wireless button when it was turning off.

Has the RAM been touched at all by the previous owner?

No idea. Probably not though. He said It was his daughter's and she wasn't using it.

The first one makes it Shut down and the other one makes it beep. I tried Swapping them or putting them in the second slot. I'll try using ram from my other laptops now.

That's to be expected, without RAM, it can't boot far enough to beep.
Try holding down F2, F11, and F12 as it boots, see what happens. Also see if it'll boot (to an error screen saying there's no bootable drive) without the hard drive.

OK I got into system revovery mode by pressing the keys on my wired keyboard (The integrated one doesn't work for some reason).
Do I just follow the instructions from now on?
Edit I pressed F8 and it started to load files. Also It started beeping again while loading.

It's giving me options now. I can boot into safe mode and others or just start normally.

Did you try booting the computer without the hard drive?

Edit: ninja'd by you, but I think it's not your mobo beeping, but instead your hard drive as odd as that sounds. But there are cases of that

Try looking into getting a new hard drive

Given that it can't turn on without the RAM, with is a safe assumption

    — Posts automatically merged - Please don't double post! —

So you're able to get into Windows, and it keeps beeping?

Not really, just into the recovery manager. I'll try again tomorow to see if safe mode works.

Can you tell me the exact model number of the HP pavilion dv5 laptop you got. I might be able to tell you the issue. I have a few dv5s and i can tell you that the dv5 was during hp's bad vista years. Most of the ones that fail are the AMD ones. The problem is they heat up and over time they fail.

You might have one of them shit HP's from the vista generation. Im very familiar with them. They all fail. the motherboards all go bad and they beep or have a sustained beep. A few of them give a sequence of blinking lights on the numlock and caps lock lite. that error code tells the error. The only fix is a new mother board.
