Hacking Brand New R4i Gold 3DS won't work on DSi

Picked up an R4 Gold 3DS for my niece for her DSi and I can't get the thing to work. She already updated her firmware to 1.4.2 so I have a fresh R4 trying to load on a newly updated 1.4.2 DSi. I got an 8GB Kingston micro SD card, downloaded WoodR4 1.29b, put the files on the root of the SD card. Then I downloaded V1.4.2b R4i 3DS gold upgrade patch and placed that in the root of the SD card. I put the card in and boot up the DSi and I see Meet the Robinsons. I press A to open it, and it goes to a black screen and tells me that an error has occurred, shut down and contact support.

Any ideas what it could be? I formatted the card using the official SD card program.

You should update your r4ids gold 3ds to support V1.4.2.
Do as the procedures listed below:

1. access http://www.r4ids.cn/r4i-download-e.html
2. choose V1.4.2b R4i 3DS gold upgrade patch and download it.
3. read readme.txt attached and do as the procedures listed in it.

Ugh, that sucks. There is no way to update the card without having another DS? I have a 3DS I could probably update it on, but I didn't want to use a flashcard in my 3DS just incase something ever happens. I guess I'll have to look around and try to find a DS Lite to borrow.

The first rule of hacking game systems is don't update. The official updates do all they can to block unofficial stuff.
