After Trump parroted his VP's talking point that Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Springfield, Ohio - there have been repeated bomb threats shuttering schools in the city.

Investigative reports into the claims have unveiled no credible evidence that pets are being consumed. The rumor is believed to have started on a Facebook group, and an interview with the initial poster has revealed she also heard of it "from a friend".

The claim has captured the imagination of the American public after Trump brought it live to households all over the country during the debate. Of note, post debate polls have shown Kamala took a small boost after what most people agree - was a win on her part.

For once, I don't blame Trump for this. It's just the consequence of the freedom of speech: it'll have repercussions outside your grasp.

It's easy and free to spread rumors, and depending on your social status, those will be believed if for nothing else the law of large numbers.
Equally so: it's easy and free (though usually illegal) to call bombings. The cost of disproving your lie by local enforcement just outreaches any effort, provided you're not caught.

Otherwise said: it's trolling. We learn our kids not to lie, but parents know they'll learn to do it when it rewards them. Equally so for others, with special mention to Donald. His base has rewarded him time and time again for just coming up with weird shit that he doesn't bother the consequence. And why should he? He literally stated his defence: he was just there for the debate. He just said stuff, that's all. He's not responsible for anything (which is weird considering he's angling for the job with the most responsibility).

I also have to point out the media's role. Of course they bring it up every so often, though for the wrong reason. Namely: this shouldn't be a political point, and i don't get how it became one. So there are hypothetical immigrants who eat equally hypothetical animals... What is that to do with the presidential election? Did I miss a "we'd like to propose a bill that'll allow immigrants to snack on pets" part?
This is just the country going through the result of a stupid Facebook meme. It's not going to change. If not Trump then some other cult leader will preach, and some dumb followers will answer.

Better brace yourself, as it's only a matter of where the first riots over election results will take place (well... Which battleground state will become a... Battleground state, really).

To some extent, if you have an audience of millions of people, you should know better than to go off spouting things as facts that you have very little information about

A president should be smart enough to discern fact from fiction (especially stupidly easy to tell fiction)

Bomb threats? Only threats? guess it's better than another crazy right-winger going to a school with a gun shooting everyone directly.

Progress?

The problem is that he doesn't know better, and because he doesn't know better he's not qualified for the presidency.

What the fuck is even MAGAts' strategy here? "If we call in bomb threats to unrelated schools, surely the city will have to admit the eating dogs and cats story is true?"

This is a VERY old form of racism by the way, Trump is reviving this bullshit from the 1940s/1950s. We can only hope this leads to him losing Florida, where there are more than 300,000 Haitians eligible to vote, and what's more, they typically lean conservative.

100% agree. This is probably my number one reason I hate him so much.

It has never stopped Trump, though. The media is usually cautious, late and with fewer credibility, and legal consequences aren't better either.
Worse: leading by example isn't so much a goal as a natural law. Meaning: since Trump doesn't fact check before spreading misinformation, others will act without critical thinking.

I feel like politicians who spread misinformation like this shouldn't still be politicians
It's crazy how one of the most important jobs in a country is given so many excuses to perform horribly. Lesser jobs have far higher standards.

I've been reading this discussion and I see your point: Trump said it. We all know that Trump is not what we could say a person in which we can trust, but as a person that have all of my life lived sorrounded of Haitians, I did not get amused with what Trump showed. I don't know if it's something cultural, I don't know if it's because of the poor situation of their country, but they are not precisely the champions of environment protection. In fact, if you take a look with Google earth to Haiti, you'll notice that there are not many trees, different to the other side of the island though they've been lately, how to say it,"terraforming" the west side of Dominican Republic. But don't panic guys, in the US the laws are respected, and the offenders will be deported, by democrats or republicans, but will be deported, as with other immigrants, it's a right of each independent country, or at least in theory.
