Activision Blizzard boss Bobby Kotick has revealed that he's keen on packaging in-game cut-scenes into a single linear narrative - and selling it to fans as a separate $30 movie.

The idea first popped into Kotick's head when he saw the quality of cut-scenes in Blizzard's StarCraft II.

"If we were to take that hour, or hour an a half, and take it out of the game and we were to go to our audiences, who we have their credit card information a direct relationship, and say to them 'Would you like to have the StarCraft movie?'" he told the America Merrill Lynch Media, comms and Entertainment conference.

"My guess is unlike film studios that are really stuck with a model that goes through theatrical distribution and takes a signification amount of the profit away, if we were to go to an audience and say 'We have this great hour and a half of linear video that we'd like to make available to you at a $20 or $30 price point,' you'd have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever.

"Within the next five years, you are likely to see us do that. It might be in a partnership with somebody or alone, but there will be a time where we'll capitalize on the relationship we have with our audience; deliver them something that is really extraordinary and let them consume it directly through us instead of theatrical distribution.

"If we were to deliver a film digitally this way, I'd say an extremely high percentage would then go to the theatre and watch it again."

Kotick isn't the first to stumble upon the idea of editing together cut-scenes for a full movie.

Rockstar released a feature length collection of Red Dead Redemption's in-game movies earlier this year - and released it on terrestrial TV.

Only Rockstar didn't charge $30 for the pleasure...

So we get to play a game, and then get completely lost because we refuse to pay for a separate movie with crucial dialog and plot elements?

    Great plan, Activision. Great plan.

as i understand it, it isn't as evil as everyone makes it seem.

i think the idea is not to sell the gameplay and the cut-scenes separately, but rather sell the game including cutscenes and with an option of buying just the cut-scenes tied together into a proper movie(with use of some gameplay recordings)
i'm all for this: lack the console, time, or interest to complete a game but don't want to lose track of the story when you get the sequel? watch the movie version!
got plenty of time to waste? play the full game.

At least Other M actually put the cut-scene movie mode onto the game disc.

But you know what users are going to do out of retaliation? Record all the cutscenes themselves and put em on youtube.
Tool Assisted/Speedruns in effect do that already.

They did this with Warcraft 3, except they included the cutscene disc in with the Collector's Edition box along with an art book.

I wouldn't pay separately, especially at $30 or even $20, considering most movie releases cost somewhere around $15-$20, and that's for a full engaging story.

Unless they made separate scenes that deal with the story in-game, I won't be interested.

On a more serious note, why would someone pay money just to watch cutscenes? Videa game plots are usually bullshit.

Long cut scenes interrupting game play are already annoying enough. The only way this would be cool is if they cut down the in game cut scenes enough that you could get your basic story and sold "extra" cut scenes for those interested in seeing more story. When I play a game I want to PLAY a game not watch a slightly interactive movie. Game designers that want to be movie directors should look for a new job... It's kinda like porn stars that want to be serious movie stars... They are not the same genre and people interested in one are not necessarily interested in the other.
