Bluehole (makers of PUBG) announces steampunk MMORPG "Ascent: Infinite Realm"

Kakao Games, known as the publisher for Black Desert Online has announced that they will be publishing a new steampunk-fantasy MMORPG from developer Bluehole, most notable for their recent mass hit, PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds. As for their history with MMO's, Bluehole was the company behind TERA, which released in 2012. A trailer was also uploaded, showing off gameplay mechanics. Massive lag and slowdown can be seen as well, though the game still is early in development. There's no set release timeframe yet, though there will be a beta sometime by Q2 2018.

About Ascent: Infinite Realm

Ascent: Infinite Realm takes place in a high fantasy steampunk world where machines and magic rule and everyone is dependent on flight to explore, travel, and conquer. In search of a new home, adventurers take to the skies using a wide selection of airships, vehicles, and flying mounts to traverse Ascent: Infinite Realm’s open, highly vertical world.

Realm vs. Realm Combat

Vehicles and mounts in Ascent: Infinite Realm serve more than just the purpose of transportation; they will also provide adventurers with the ultimate battle experience: Ascent: Infinite Realm’s Realm vs. Realm PvP mode. In RvR, factions fight for fame and glory, taking turns to lead offensive and defensive efforts using all kinds of fantastical flying vehicles. Players can also join the fight from the ground with mechs and the use of anti-air artillery to fight airborne threats―or initiate ground based aerial attacks depending on the map and strategy. Various strategic weapons such as cannons, mines and attack buffs are at each faction’s disposal to tip the balance in their favour. The combination of ground-based and aerial combat makes each fight strategically challenging and dynamic.

Keeping it Personalized

Most of Ascent: Infinite Realm’s content is highly customizable, allowing players to tailor detailed aspects of their play experience and unleash their creativity. An airship, for instance, can have its type, appearance, color, and performance modified. Players can even create their own quests, alter their hunting grounds, and change the difficulty when battling monsters in dungeons or hunting areas.

■ Key Features

  • Explore a beautifully designed high fantasy steampunk world.
  • Discover a fusion of classic MMORPG elements with multi-dimensional gameplay encompassing both land and sky.
  • Choose from five fully customizable classes.
  • Conquer the skies with Ascent: Infinite Realm’s Realm vs. Realm mode and experience massive aerial battles.

I've been utterly disappointed with every MMO they published... If there's a free beta, I'll try it, I'm always looking for a good MMORPG to play, but honestly I'm not expecting anything.

Well this looks better than PUBG at least, but I've heard that's still a laggy, unoptimized mess so maybe they should focus on polishing that before moving on to another project. With MH Worlds and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on the horizon, another MMO doesn't seem worth anyone's time.

First off, studios can have multiple teams. Based on this trailer, this game is already years into development. Especially with an estimated beta for 2018. MMORPGs are fucking gigantic. They take a long time to create. Clearly, PUBG and this have two separate teams.

Tera has absurdly good combat. Though, that's about all the game has going for it. The RPG side of things was incredibly mediocre outside of the really cool raids, and BAMs being super fun to kill (until they ruined it with massive power creep trivializing their content).

Kakao has been a surprisingly good publisher. As much as people cry pay2win for BDO, it's by far the best MMORPG on the market, with huge potholes for anyone trying to pay to progress in Black Desert. I think I calc'd it out to something like, $15,000 across 4-5 months (you can only sell 5 items a week at a set price nowhere worth what you paid, and can't avoid the massive AH tax fees by any means) to get a single piece of endgame gear, and this was months ago so new more expensive gear more than likely replaced the item I used as an example. There's a few things to make your life easier, for sure. But nothing game breaking like basically every other MMO out there with a cash shop. (edit: oh and not to mention buying a piece of endgame gear is an interesting feat given most pieces of gear number less than 5 sold since the game released, and mats to create the gear are also in limited supply on the AH)

So i'm pretty hopeful for this game. If Bluehole learned from their mistakes with Tera I could see this being great, I just hope the combat is as good. It's hard to tell via a trailer.

Gambia, The
animations look a bit stiff sometimes, but otherwise, if gameplay holds up, this might be a ton of fun.

What is with these Korean video game developers and feeling the need to insert obnoxious and ugly animal races in their games?

Is steampunk a type of game? For some reason that word reminds me of steamworld dig
Steampunk is a subgenre of sci-fi much like cyberpunk and whalepunk.

Some places seems more polished than others. Not really sure about the game yet, but it does have a cool setting.

Kind of weird seeing this post while having that avatar and sig.

Roleplaying games like MMOs tend to try diversify character creation to reach as many people as they can, and furries are (unfortunately) a pretty large group.
It's not a korean thing, actually it's probably most common in western MMOs because furries are way bigger here.

Speaking of TERA... Bluehole should put some focus on fixing the game's exploit which was found recently. Not surprise this is not in the news on this site seeing as how low of a player base it is compare to other games.
