Hacking Blu-Ray Drive is broken, can I still upgrade my firmware?

I'm just trying to be cautious here. I read that if you upgrade the firmware with a bad hard drive, it could red screen. Is the same a possibility with a bad blu-ray drive?

I have upgraded and down graded mine and it has a bad Blueray so yeah its safe
