In this topic I'm not talking about God and stuff, but about sneezing. Because in English you say "Bless you!" when someone sneezes.
But how do you say that in your language? And what would be the literal translation of that?

I hardly speak mandarin now (my family speaks english and I have been speaking it ever since I stepped foot in the US. DUH!)... but previously I said 'sorry' when I sneezed in front of my chinese friend.

Sorry - 对不起 / 對不起 (depends on where you are from, PRC or ROC/HK)
Pronounced as 'dui bu qi' in chinese mandarin.

Of course in HK, the writing is the same but the way of saying is different. That's chinese cantonese (a dialect).

Spanish- "Salud"- health
if you sneeze a chain second sneeze- you say "Amor", which is love, wishing the person will find love, and if you sneeze a 3rd time in a row you say "Dinero".

Salud, Amor, y Dinero.
Health, Love, and Money.

apparently to the spanish speaking populace money is more valuable than love.

"Santinho" is what we say in portugal

the history behind it is like... let me tell you:

Before, Many years ago when people would sneeze, they would say "Santinho" because they though that when you sneezed, your soul would leave your body for some seconds, and because of that, people say "Santinho" to purificate it... something like that

Santinho would be like Bless You, but im not sure?

brazilian portuguese is - Deus te abençoe = Bless you. But when you sneeze the more common in Brazil is to say saude = health.

Saying "Bless You" is one of my biggest pet peeves. Who the hell gave anyone the power to bless anyone else; and of all times, when you sneeze?

Don't even get me started on "God bless you." Do people really think God is sitting up there waiting for you to sneeze, just so he can "bless you"?

In French :

"à tes souhaits" for singular/friend.
"à vos souhaits" for plural/respective form when talking to someone not close friend/unknown person.

Literally "at your wishes", it means "may your wishes become true".


Sometime, but maybe derived from Italian "Santé !" (translation of Salute! -> health)
I'm living at Italy border, so I also hear Salute sometime.


There's also "Oh my god, he is suffocating, what happen !! .... " no, don't worry, I'm just trying to sneeze silently

And when I sneeze, it's 10 times in a row (minimum !) lol

In my country we just say "Salud" repeatedly when people sneeze more than once o.o

Erm... 對不起 (Dui Bu Qi / Sorry) in Mandarin is said by the 'sneezer', and not used in the same context as "Bless You" in English.

Chinese doesn't have a designated phrase that we say when someone sneezes. A common one that can be used in the same context as "Bless You" would be "你還好嗎?" (Ni Hai Hao Ma / Are You OK?).

that's "à tes souhaits" (or "à vos souhaits") not santé.


The other one are more derived form or translation of other country's expression.
