Gaming Black Knight beat me up 6 times in a row, is there a cheat/trick for this in Shovel Knight?

I know there are all sorts of cheat codes you can enter at the beginning of this game. The problem for me is that many cheats make the game too easy.

The black knight guy at the end of the first level kicks my ass so consistently it is not funny. Is there some kind of trick to defeating him? Perhaps there is some weapon I missed hidden someplace? Or some stupid shovel trick, other than the pogo thing? I have played that first level so many times.

Never resort to cheating tho, that way you can just stop playing as the challange will be out of the game.

"Cheating" is an unfortunate word choice. But I guess Kobayashi Maru-ing is a pretty tortuous mouthfull.
