.breff files are also used in Mario Kart Wii, so you might try Wiimms SZS Tools to extract these archive files, edit their contents and repack them.

I used that to get the Trail* files. I'm asking how to edit these files. I'm starting to think that they are also proprietary formats by Gaijin Games.

hm ok, sorry then didn't know that. But if I should come across a way to edit the trail files, I will let you know
