Curious, if you put a game in and then remove it, do the applets still loose their banner or do things still freeze? or this only when the game cart is inserted?

If only when a cartridge is inserted then the system sounds like it hanging when trying to read the NAND / EEPROM memory on the cartridge.

If the applets normally don't always open or freeze then it sounds like eMMC corruption and that could be just wear and tear over time, maybe a update will help it, maybe it's the actually hardware eMMC starting to die, depend on how many uses but they are rated to last at least over five years or more if I recall. Though I have seen them fail earlier in a DSi and a original 3DS. :(

Also, I do not believe that is a slot guard at all, it in fact it appears to apply downward pressure on the card to ensure a better connection. They did however stop using that particular cartridge slot shielding and I'm sure there is a reason
yeah idk i havent really paid *too* much attention to the card slots, just remember seeing the pressure/slot guard thing in a lot of them and don't really recall seeing one without it (although i wasn't actively checking each one).....i know its not like that on n3DS consoles but all the o3ds/o3ds XL consoles i can remember did have it.....but i guess maybe they are just less common without but do exist

Ill explain it all properly now:
- Putting a DS cart in causes it to hang, if I put it in before turning it on, onyl the blue light appears, the system wotn start up
- it will not read 3DS carts at all, and if it does, which si rare, it doesnt actualyl 'read' them, the applets loose their banners and the next action I do on the console will make it freeze, but the music still plays
- I do not understand why there is no cart shield thing, and my Red 3DS came without one (ebay, but that works, perfect)
- the applets will lose their banner if a DS cart is plugged in, removing it does nothing. The applets very rarely lose their banners putting a 3DS cart in (ive tried muliple different ones), nothing really happens, except that the 3DS doesnt read the cart - its as if theres no cart in it.

Interesting there is not cartridge slot shielding at all, would you mind taking a picture? Also if there is no game does the system boot and run just fine?

You said there is no shielding, the shielding it the metal around the entire slot it's self.

If it's missing the whole metal casing around it I would be concerned. Unless you are talking about the difference between these two in that it doesn't have the downward fin like the second one.

well yeah i defiantly haven't seen any original 3DS's/XL's without the cutout in the card slot....that looks weird i would of noticed one like that, and even on the 2014 revision of the 3DS XL it still has the cutout on it, so i dont think they stopped using them after a certain point, maybe they just did a small batch with no cutout bit......pretty sure i have seen those ones on DSi's though....maybe some of the very early ones used some spare DSi parts or something
