Nintendo of America has bulldozed its old Redmond, US headquarters - the home of its Western games business for almost 30 years.

The Washington office - which the company moved to from New York City in 1982 - was where its unmistakable mascot Mario was Christened.

The platforming legend was named after then-president Minoru Arakawa noticed the character looked a lot like NOA's warehouse landlord, Mario Segale.

From the HQ Nintendo of America successfully introduced the Nintendo Entertainment System to the American market, along with every piece of hardware since from Gameboy, through to Super NES and Nintendo 64.

As you can see from the photos on this page - supplied by a CVG reader - the old NOA HQ now lies in ruins, which makes the Nintendo fans in us a little sad.

But Nintendo of America itself isn't dead; in fact it's going from strength to strength and has recently moved to a new, prettier-looking building elsewhere in Redmond.

President Satoru Iwata said he hopes the new HQ "will help employees to be even more creative and productive, and continue to put smiles on the faces of our consumers."

Still, that's a lot of history being ground underneath those diggers right there.

Yeah, the old HQ sucked pretty bad. The only area available to the public was a stupid little gift shop/museum, where there was a display case about 8 feet wide displaying consoles, and various Nintendo history, and that was about it. The gift shop was full of shit that you could get at any Toy store, or eBay. R.I.P, but make your HQ a little more accessible to the public, Ninty.
