I already did some research but I don't want to go downloading 10 different programs to end up uninstalling 9 of them. I need a good program that can backup video files on DVDs and save them as AVI files. Thanks for any help in advance.

So all you want to do is burn AVI files to a DVD for backup purposes? Then ANY burning software will do really. A popular one is Nero Burning ROM.

All in one programs are generally less than fantastic and usually offer minimal options but ripit4me and autoGK should do what you ask and spit out high quality files in the end.
    ripit4me:
    http://www.ripit4me.org/
    AutoGK:
http://www.autogk.me.uk/ (you may also want to check doom9 forums for new betas: http://forum.doom9.org/ )
If you want subs subrip and subtitle workshop are apps you want:
    http://zuggy.wz.cz/
    Subtitle workshop
    http://urusoft.cjb.net/

If you are feeling a bit braver you could try dgmpegdec (comes with autoGK) but also here:
http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html (equally check doom9 for beta versions
and MeGUI or a similar app:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96032 (check the forum subsection in the link above for alternatives)

If you want something to play it back with I highly recommend CCCP:

Awesome, thank you for your help. I'm going to try RipIt4Me and see how that works.
