I know there is such a thing as TWLoader, but a lot of the games require a donor to play them, and I don't not have a donor game to use, so I was wondering which Flashcart would be best to use to play with no problems. I have heard many success stories about some of the flashcarts running any and all nds games near flawlessly. I also heard that some of the flashcarts are "time bombs" and will stop working after a while. So opinions please and thank you!

B.T.W. I am using CFW and just updated to Luma 9.0 if any of that matters, and using most recent 3ds firmware update.

R4i GOLD RTS is about $17USD last I checked. The TT is $7 and is SDHC compatible. Almost anything will work on a CFW 3DS really. You can use an AR technically. I recommend you think of cost, NO time bomb, power consumption, compatibility and make sure you get one that is SDHC and NTR Boot compliant just in case. There is a ton of new +NTR cards that will probably work well. The card I suggested is one I own and it works very well. Remember having something in the slot can drain your battery even if you are not using it. Extra processors in the cartridge and such. The R4i GOLD RTS has not caused any noticeable drain. If power consumption isn't an issue or cost then maybe a DSTWO because the extra processors make for some decent emulators. If super cheap is better, the old R4 works just fine too but it is missing ll the bells and whistles and no SDHC, NTR.

So to revise my recommendation, (I like lists)
  1. R4i GOLD RTS ($17) - Still my number 1 because , to me it's the best all around. Low power, SDHC, Real time saves, NTR boot compatible but must be flashed.
  2. One of the new NTR cards - ($$$??) These have NTR boot preflashed and are SDHC compliant. Don't know about Power, cheats, etc. etc., but if you are hacking lots of consoles this might be an option you should consider.
  3. DSTT ($7)- The DS Top Toy is SDHC compatible,is white with a side loading SD (At least mine is) so in the slot it look like a regular cartridge. And its low power. No fancy In game menu, Real Time Save or anything.
  4. DS TWO ($40+) - The Cadillac, it's got some battery drain and a hefty price but it's the most full featured of the old generation DS flash carts. Extra CPU help emulators run very smoothly(mostly)
  5. R4DS ($4) - The original R4, no SDHC no Cheats,RTS,In-Game menu or anything else. But it's super cheap.
  6. Sky3DS+ ($90?) - This cart will play NDS and 3DS games on a stock system. If you got this you could utilize space on an SD to store more 3DS games as well as NDS games
For my money, I like the R4i GOLD RTS. It served me well. Or you could get a Gateway... LOL no don't do that.

I don't want to flash it or anything, just add roms, plug it in, and play. So the R4i Gold basically?

r4ids.cn (R4i Gold) is a good choice. r4isdhc.com.cn is a good cheap option. Stay away from r4isdhc.com and r4i-sdhc.com carts.

Those are both great choices. A lot of carts will be named similarly and have time bombs so you have to watch out.. There was one on the NDS-CARDS.COM (GBAtemp sponsor) named R4i GOLD RTS but it seems those are no longer there, shit. There is the plus version squall linked, those are both great carts. I also like DSTT for bare bones. CHEAP. Mine is a side loading one, weird. i like that about it a lot.

The Sky3DS+ doesn't have any DS game support. You might be thinking of Stargate. And does Gateway even come with the blue (DS) card anymore? Either way, none of those are good options obviously.

Yeah, basically. Get the R4i Gold 3DS Plus (it's a newer revision of the R4i Gold 3DS RTS).

Yeah I meant Stargate lol. Lot's of Aquavit last night. But IMHO Stargate isn't a bad option if you have tons of cash. I like my old GW for extra space. It might be fun to do that again. But I still stand by what I said. R4i GOLD RTS(+ because the regular is gone). It works.

OK, so if I get one of the r4 carts, then how exactly do I flash it? You have me sold on the fact that it lowers power consumption, and has real time saves. I really want to play the zelda games and the pokemon games for the nds mainly, but I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by "flashing" the r4 card? I am so new to the Flashcart scene that I have zero what that means, or how to do so.

You don't need to . The new one that replaced it is pre-flashed for NTR boot. And you don't need NTR Boot anyway. Only if you want to install B9S on a system 11.4+. You are already hacked. The new cart has a switch to go to NTR boot mode if you want to hack a new/updated 3ds.. The linked R4i GOLD RTS PLUS is the best option for you. The DSTT does EVERYTHING except the RTS for half the price. But if you want to hack a 3DS with it you have to flash NTR Boot to it.

To Clarify, what I am referring to is an exploit for the 3DS called NTR Boot to install B9S. It is a method to hacking 3DS systems above 11.2. You have to write the hack to the flash memory of the Flashcart to use it. Most carts will be unusable for NDS games while NTR BOOT is installed. The point is moot because you are hacked unless you want to hack more systems in the future.

I don't need to hack my 3ds at all, I've been on CFW since the firmware 10 days haha! I just update my payloads, Luma, and b9s everytime a new update is available. But thank you so much for all the information! I just really want to play some nds games, and was looking for which is the best to use, I'll check them out for sure and go from there!

Thanks Bunches

this one in my opinion is one of the best...it even has a little switch inside to flash ntr in case you brick want to mod a console on newer firmware

@klonoa02, sorry, ask in the forums, I can't help

@klonoa02, Not sure if that will hurt your Nand or not, not wise to use fake SD cards, or not check them beforehand with app like H2testw. I'd let it finish personally, or attempt to.

Do you have a backup of your Nand already? It will be about 32gb.
  • False_Hope @ False_Hope:
if the sd card is false then it might not hold more than 2gb

If you have a Nand backup then I'd say go ahead n stop it, or power off the switch, at worse you can rewrite your backup Nand back if it messed anything up.
