hey, is there already a list of the best RPGs for the DS? If not, anyone want to start listing their favorites?

There really aren't many to pick from if you don't understand Japanese.

DS RPGs I enjoyed:
-Lost Magic
-Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time

DS games with RPG elements I enjoyed:
-Advance Wars: Dual Strike
-Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow

El Diablo

In my opinion Lost Magic isn't really an RPG but more of a realtime strategy game.
You could try Lost in Blue. It's not really an RPG, either, more of an adventure... Well, try it anyway because it's awesome.

The only DS RPGs I remember playing are Contact which will probably be awesome when it's released in English and Deep Labyrinth which isn't really that great though the English version might help.
If you need to play an awesome RPG on your DS I suggest putting an English version of Mother for NES (also known as Earthbound Zero) on your Flashcart. There is also a translation patch for the first half of the Japanese Mother 1&2 Rom. That's what I am playing at the moment.
Edit: I don't know how far your basic Japanese will get you in these games but if you have a Flashcart you could just try it.

I was in a similar situation to you issac17 but I let myself slip on learning when my laptop got stolen. If you do not mind looking up the odd character every 5/10 minutes or so many Japanese RPGs are quite enjoyable and if you keep at it you will find that you know many Kanji well enough after a few weeks/months to play almost freely.

Back to the topic at hand.
English RPG's on the DS:
Dino Master
Tao's Adventure
Lost Magic
Megaman 5 Might I suggest you tweak the voices to Japanese though. Guide here
Phoenix Wright (I am stretching a bit here)
Lunar Genesis/Dragon Song
Mario and Luigi Partners in time
Battles of Prince of Persia (stretching again)
Castlevania
Trace Memory/Another Code.

Japanese, There is a bit more selection here and I am not including ones above:
Metal Saga
Simple series vol8 The Kanshikikan (Sort of like Phoenix Wright outside of court sections)
Tsubasa Chronicle 1 and 2
Osawari Tantei - Ozawa Rina , more adventure than RPG.
Angelique Duet - Hiku Toshi Monogatari
Mar Heaven - Karudea no Akuma
Deep Labyrinth (More action based but could be confused for an Elder Scrolls/Might and Magic type game)
Xenosaga I + II
Contact
Ys Strategy, stretching once more.
Pokemon Rangers. OK I should take up Yoga I seem to like stretching
Tengai Makyou II - Manji Maru
Daikoukai Jidai IV - Rota Nova. Yoga is my destiny
Seiken Densetsu DS (Children of Mana), if I have to explain the mana series then RPG's ain't for you.
San Goku Shi DS, OK it is a strategy game but still
Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon, It is pokemon and yeah it probably counts as an RPG
Chokoken no Omise - Patisserie Sweets Shop Game, Only here becuase I could not categorise it anywhere else: think pokemon clone.
Iron Feather, think shining soul.
Mangaka Debut Monogatari DS - Akogare! Mangaka Ikusei Game. This game barely makes it in becuase I hate it so much.
Wizardry Asterisk - Hiiro no Fuuin
Bouken-Ou Beet - Vandel vs. Busters
Zoids Saga DS
Bokujou Monogatari - Korobokkuru Station for Girl
Londonian Gothics
Kibukawa Ryosuke Jiken Dan - Kamen Genei Satsujinjiken
SD Gundam G Generation DS
Hagane no Renkinjutsushi - Dual Symphony
Naruto RPG 2 - Chidori vs Rasengan

I would be lying if I said that I had played all of these, quite in fact most of the list above is a series of poor games or rehashes so I am glad I have not.

Phoenix Wright and Another Code are adventures but everyone with a DS should certainly play Phoenix Wright!

your sig, the last one? Does that say sebaibarukizzu? or am I way off...

edit: sabaibarukizzu...
It stands for Survival Kids so you are probably right.
If your Japanese is good enough, you should probably try Contact.

Cool, I guess first thing tomorrow I'm going to go pick up a DS Lite at bestbuy, along with the free 'brain age' game, and the 4GB media kit thingy. I'll try some japanese games, maybe it'll inspire me to get my japanese books back out.

Oh, duh, sabaibaru == survival kizzu(pronounced ki'zu) == kids. Didn't catch that.

Has anyone found Lost Magic to be enjoyable? Everyone I talk to about it only says it's so so. And Xenosaga is coming to the US right?

Lost Magic is probably the best type of RTS you can make on the DS. It's also executed well from what I've played. However, it seems to include a lot of trial and error and the story is pretty lame. It's understandable that you are disappointed if you expected an RPG because Lost Magic isn't really an RPG.
