Since AVG started f-ing up (installed an update but it keeps requesting a restart everytime I boot it.), I decided to ditch it and switch to a new one. Can you suggest me an antivirus that is:

- freeware
- easy to use
- the best, of course
- not a resource hog

Thanks!

Personally I use Avira AntiVir.

Free, easy and light.

And as AV-Comparatives.org says, it was the Best Antivirus 2008 overall

have you tried a clean install? uninstall the old one and delete all folders, restart the comp and reinstall. it usually works fine after that.

Reinstalling it makes it worse.

I want to re-install the OS but I don't have time. Maybe in half-term.

I decided to switch because it messes up pretty often.

I noticed that AVG8 did this a lot. Reverting to the last AVG7 version fixed that for me. Been using it for over 6 months now no probs.

Linux is the best anti virus, of course.

but, if you insist on sticking with wind'ohs then avast is probably the second best
Tried a Linux but I found it too complicated (maybe because I got used to the "feel" of Windows so I ditched it.

I will get a Macbook soon because a lot of people who have Macs in college have convinced me that it is the best. When I get it, I will install Linux on the laptop I'm using right now.

I used Linux on my dual boot PC a few years back, but realised Bill Gates was too successful in keeping me a stupid end user that doesn't know how to use anything else other than Windows lol... Wine just wasn't good enough to satisfy my needs.

Hmmm, anyway, as for anti-virus software, I'm currently running Avast!, which works pretty well for me. Not the fastest, not the best, but it's free and transparent about what it does.

what linux? ubuntu is really easy. as you said, it could just be you didn't give it enough time, how long did it take you to learn to use windows?

as for Macs, they have virii too, not as many, but they tend to be rootkits that are far worse than your average virus

WINE, quite frankly sucks, but it works both ways, cygwin sucks too. the best idea is to find FOSS alternatives to the software you want. which the is for pretty much anything but the most niche things.

Yeah, don't buy a mac. Heaven knows I've encountered viruses on mine. Not. Just don't pirate via infected cracks on bt and you'll generally be safe. Social engineering is the biggest threat to mac. Not viruses.

AVG was having conflicts with Team Fortress 2 and made it go SLOWWWW so I got AVAST! and it is pretty cool.

It warns you of a virus on a web page before it loads! =D

I used to use ESET for some time but just after Xmas my PC went down from trojans ESET didn't pick up. I switched to Symantec Endpoint Protection and so far it's been great.

Went to distrowatch.com to remember what distros I have used.

Smoothwall
Yoper
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu (used it for like 10 times)
openSuSE (I kept this for about 2 months, it's cool)
Fedora
Mandrake
PCLinux
Damn Small (but I don't get it)
Gentoo (didn't figure out how to access the GUI, it was all codes)

The most useful distro I use is GPartition or something like that.

I tried installing ESET but my PC went really, really slow for some reason.

I am now using Antivir and guess what, it also found 2 warnings as AVG did. But the scanning is faster and my boot time is reduced.

Thanks to all for the help!

I use Avast! Antivirus. It is pretty good, it gives a couple false positives every once in a while but that's just for applications that create files or keygens. Pretty good though

but i cannot recommend this with a low specs of pc

because it will slow down your startup windows because of realtime scanning
Keep in mind that the OP was looking for a FREE anti virus.
