Homebrew Benefits of Retroarch over other emulators?

I see a lot of people here recommending Retroarch emulators, but from my experience most Retroarch emulators are much slower than the other options. It also has a much more complicated UI. Is there something I'm missing out on?

Being able to turn off the bottom screen to save battery (if someone could implement that into the AGB_FIRM that would be great.)

It's a great emulator that runs most consoles/handhelds/PCS/neogeo at full speed, especially when you have the N3DS. But be sure to use the stable build 1.3.3 from March because the latest builds are buggy in more ways.
