I have a Wii that I haven't used in about 8 or so years. It is on 4.2E version. I honestly don't remember what methods I used to mod it, but I have Homebrew Channel and some old version of CFG USBLoader installed. I also have some Wiiware and VC games installed to the console.

What I'd like to do is to somehow unmod and then re-mod the console with the latest hacks so that I can play Wii, Gamecube, Wiiware and Virtual Console games, all from an external USB hard drive.

Would updating the console to 4.3 bring back the console to stock status and then start the modding from scratch? Or is there some other method involved to reinstall IOSes or cIOSes? I honestly don't know where to start. If someone could point me in the right direction to an updated tutorial I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

You can use many different Ways to bring your Wii up to Date.:)

- you can use @XFlak ´s ModMii to Update your Wii to 4.3x and your Softmod and your Tools.
- you can use the Wii System Update for Version 4.3x but please Note, this will NOT bring your Wii back to Stock.
After that you need to install some cIOSes and update your Tools/Applications on your SD Card.
- you can make a sysCheck and update your cIOSes manually if you like.
- you can use the "official" Wii Hacking Guide to re-softmod/update your Wii.

A "personal" Note if you allow please: It is NOT necessary to "unmod" your Wii.:)

Good Luck and have (again) Fun with the Modding of your Wii.
Thank you.:)

Thanks for the reply. I don't necesarily want to unmod the console, I just thought it would be better to return to a clean slate as to not mess up the IOSes or something because I vaguely remember people installing and reinstalling those when updating (maybe I'm wrong on this one I honestly can't remember much, it's been over a decade since I modded my Wii) and I don't really want to manually go through updating those :)

I just want to run all games from the USB hdd, does that official Wii Hacking Guide cover running Wiiware and VC games from HDD?

Yes and unfortunately no.:(
For this there are other "Challenges" to solve for Example that Thing with the "Screen Resolution" on some Games.
(Black Screen when you start a VC/Wiiware Game).
As the Name "USBLoader" says,it mainly goes for the Wii Games (and also for the GameCube Games today, since they works als great from USB when formatted with FAT32).

You maybe also can try @fledge68 ´s excellent WiiFlow Lite (this great Loader has awesome Compatibility with all Kind of Games including Emulators).

Thank you.:)

Official updates carry the risk of 003 bricking modded consoles that were originally Korean and region changed to something different. Most people with these consoles never even know the wii was originally Korean until they experience this brick. Check the serial number to see if it's Korean, or just use ModMii to update to 4.3, it does not have any risk of 003 bricks

My Wii is not Korean that is sure. Anyway, like I said I just want to load all games from an USB. As I can load Wii and GC games from USB without doing anything to my Wii right now, I'm more interested in loading WiiWare and VC games from USB. Briefly searching around I read that I need some kind of emunand setup which requires me to install new cIOSes? There is a ton of info out there and I'm not sure which one is correct or which is outdated, that's why I asked for help to point me to a rather recent tutorial that I could use to achieve what I want.

Modmii :)

There are 2 kinds of emunand: the one built into CIOS (where you run titles using a compatible usb loader), and neek (= sneek/uneek) where you run a completely separate system; yes they have different compatibility...

The modern recommended CIOS is d2x v8 (or v10.52, same thing, but not v10.53) base 57 as default (= installed to IOS249) and other bases as needed, depending on when you installed a CIOS your 259 is probably d2x v8 base 56 or something else, so yes there may be some benefit to redoing the process :)

Any wad manager that works, running on an IOS that accepts fakesigning, is equal

My recommendation is "Some Yawmm Mod" which can use AHBPROT and so does not depend on any patched IOS, however MMM with a trucha-enabled IOS (for example a CIOS) selected is just fine

You're not using modmii as it was intended. You should use one of its wizards, either the main/first wizard or the syscheck updater wizard will help u not only get you a wad manager but also assist with any other steps that might be required in order to optimize your mods

I used the Modmii wizard just like you suggested and updated my console to 4.3E sysmenu along with the softmod files. Thanks for the help.

I also installed Nintendont and USBloaderGX. Strangely Nintendont doesn't recognize my usb hdd (hdd is formatted FAT32, MBR) but USBloaderGX does so I'm able to play Gamecube games trough it.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
