My Wii U froze when I hit the play button on a youtube video. I was downloading a software update. I yanked out the cord and plugged it back in. Guess what? I HAD TO RESTART THE UPDATE ALL OVER AGAIN.
Be careful when watching youtube videos.

Does the newest update fix this issue?

You where downloading a System update or an update of Youtube?

Also, shouldn't the Wii U do nothing but downloading/installing the update before going to switch to something else so accidents like this can be prevented?
Silly Ninty.

Downloading the update is one thing, installing the update is another (when installing system menu updates, I'm pretty sure that it DOES do nothing but that).

Anyway, weird. I've never had a Youtube video crash on me, so not sure what happened to you.

I can confirm the OP's experience with the youtube videos. Recently, when I play youtube videos the Wii U freezes.
Even with my games, the Wii U freezes and a loud noise keeps on going, maybe it's the same situation? (Btw, I didn't try the latest update yet)

Watching youtube videos pretty much doesn't crash on the new update. Change your user agent for youtube videos to play. I think youtube is blocking the Wii U

And how do you change the agent? Does it have to be done every time? And why would YouTube block the console if there's an app on the system menu?

I hate to use an IGN link, but it looks like sites detect the Wii U as a mobile device (post #2)

I'd be careful of this. my wii u did that day 1. it rarely happens but now I can't sync anything to the console and no power is going to the sensor bar port and the sync button does not work. I'm actually getting it ready for repairs now before I loose the warranty.

Oh boy, thanks, I better watch out then.
But I did google this some time ago and it seemed to be a common problem and people said it was due to the overloading of the games.

i think the title should be edited to
"Be careful when watching youtube videos on your Wii U when downloading updates"

just so it's a little more clear on the subject

someone found a workaround where if you go into the wiiu browser settings and change the user agent to internet explorer, the youtube freeze doesnt happen .. but you have to do that change every time you boot the browser up thats your only temp fix at the moment..

Hopefully there will be a permanent fix, but I don't know why this happened after the update, either the web devs or Nintendo effed up.
