Saw some talking about it so might as well have a topic.

Says a gameplay one is due before too terribly long (13th June) and some stuff being trickled out in July as well (so full bore keeping the hype up marketing time I guess).
Website
https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-2042
with https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-2042/game-overview/specialists probably being among the more interesting pages.
Setting is the world is now awful, nations less of a thing than they were and the soldiers you are playing as are now nice mercenaries (presumably to appease the various countries that say "we can't be the bad guy" or those saying "playing as the bad guy renders them just artwork rather than bad guys")

On the video itself. Seems to have a thing for people getting splatted. Wingsuits being a thing... OK but parachutes were mostly a thing already. Not sure what the tornado bit is about, hopefully we get something fun like a commander launched weapon but probably just going to be level change setup if I am being realistic/cynical (the series as a whole is now known for changing levels via actions in the in game map and changing the style of play.

The jet swap sequence is likely a nod to a famous video

Those that bothered to watch the press talks said they were returning time and again to "battlefield moments" which in my experience wore thin after about anybody's third round of play but one tends to be friends with people like them so maybe you are less cynical.

Robotic thing is presumably based on the Stanford robotics walking robot

Personally I actually put quite a bit of time into 4 when all was said and done, and up to fairly recent times as well (EU servers hardcore mode on PS4 seemed to have something of a decent community) but I joined way late in the day (got it for £10 or so and a few weeks later had that every DLC is free weekend). Very much dependent on the people you are playing with but can pretty consistently get some decent stuff going on. This would then be the first near future one in a while (you had cops and robbers in hardline, then fantasy world war 1 and even more fantasy world war 2, and while 1 would have been nice had they not bumped fire rates up to ridiculous and had some nice maps I ultimately ignored it, and I was around for the first medal of honor (still got a copy around here somewhere) through the 9000 World War 2 games that followed it to be bored). Near future is great fun as well, choice video at this point

https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-2042/media has some stills as well. Don't know what we are supposed to read into the "cinematic content, not gameplay".

Anyway a press event was held where more details were revealed.

if weapon and vehicle names are your thing then this goes through a few of them seen thus far (I like weapons well enough but nothing particularly interesting, and everything depends on the numbers the devs put in, which will inevitably be done in the name of balance rather than the far more interesting superior tech).

No classes, now have "specialists". https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-2042/game-overview/specialists for the few revealed so far. Functionally it seems much the same as classes though. The cynic in me smells an excuse for new paid for skins, specialists and such where a full class being gated might sit poorly, probably "oh wow look at all that money Rainbow Six Siege raked in" though the optimist might ponder if it is to give some kind of actual character (speaking to fans of Rainbow Six Siege then they actually know the names of individual classes so who knows).
No single player.
The classic conquest mode that arguably defines the series apparently is getting mixed up a bit. Seems each former objective has more micro objectives (don't know if this is similar to say planetside 2 which was taking a bit of Battlefield's lunch). The video above reckons it is to try to keep people more bunched together*.
Apparently levels are going to be quite large, and if the PC is squeaking up to 128 players (64 per side compared to 32 per side of older stuff) that could make for something. Looking a bit sparse though so I guess that means vehicles are back in and are going to be more useful.
Mention of a grappling hook which could change things somewhat -- perhaps less having to beg lifts from passing helicopters (or hoping it is not a "everybody bail" kind of deal or people spawn the jets to use as a high speed insertion tool), be funnelled into lifts with nice machine guns and rain of explosives waiting when the doors open, hoping your team set up a spawn beacon or are somewhere to spawn on top of.

*though I imagine we will still see people playing with mortars and sniper rifles where most (me and my 3.4 scope DMR being the exception) can't reach them

The "positive play charter" ( https://www.ea.com/commitments/positive-play/charter ) does take some time to mention in game currency fun, though it appears to be a general thing (even if straight linked from the main 2042 site) so who knows what they are going to try for on gating things away.

Wait and see for me with this one but if EA can keep their hands from wandering into my wallet (huge ask I know but maybe they learned) I can see some fun happening. I will keep my thoughts on the economics of the setting (most future tech like that is very hard to make without a solid peacetime infrastructure and usually requires 4x/5x your combat strength to even maintain it, never mind get spare parts) as rule of cool will sate that for now.

Gameplay trailer dropped

If it is complaining about needing to sign in then

6 player attack plane by the looks of things which could mix it up a bit.
Some weapon mods able to be done in game (it did always bother me that you could not remove a silencer or clip on a grip (or indeed remove the bipod when it was annoying me) despite modern stuff and even not so modern stuff being detachable by design.
Vehicle drops is nice to see.
Grappling hook looks like it might be a fun addition to hunt down those snipers that managed to snag a jet or helicopter ride for that otherwise inaccessible perch.
Wingsuit looks like a wingsuit and I imagine I will be wanting to play Just Cause before too long but hey.

Not sure about portraits over simple/obvious class symbols to find out that all your team picked snipers. Said snipers also seem to think future combat with VTOL troop carriers still warrants a bolt action rifle as well.
