Mother 3, the sequel to the quirky underated SNES RPG Earthbound was released in Japan in 2006 on the GBA and despite continous demand from fans a international release has never been planned, wwo years later, Starmen.net released a fan translation patch.

Recently, Kotaku correspondent Stephen Totilo sat down with Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata and the issue of Mother 3 was raised

Stephen Totilo: I would be remiss in not telling you that some of my writers would like to play another Advance Wars and they would someday like to play Mother 3 in America… [Iwata writes something down] … Whenever I ask Reggie about Mother 3, he says, ‘ask Mr. Iwata.’

Satoru Iwata: “Just yesterday, before I left from Japan, I met with Mr. Itoi, who is the creator of the Earthbound series.”

Stephen Totilo: “Oh, I know. Are we ever going to get it?”

Iwata: “And, yeah, accidentally we were discussing that there are huge fans from Western countries for the Mother series.”

Stephen Totilo: “So, someday? Someday?”

Satoru Iwata: “[laughs] Thank you. Great to see you!”

While this is in no way a confirmation, odds are in favor of a 3DS release as oppose to a release on the neow discontinued Game Boy Advance

Um...where in the world does that imply it? Stephen asks, and Iwata doesn't even acknowledge the question. That's not "potential" of it coming stateside...that's him not wanting to talk about it. Unless I'm missing something.

Don't game designers and developers talk like this all of the time, about stuff they'd like to do, and that might potentially end up on the table at some point?

I'd say the odds are still against it, really. There are some huge fans, but not enough to warrant a localization. The game may be well known around here, but we make far too many assumptions about what would actually be worthwhile based off the minority interests that exist on this forum.

Edit: And as was pointed out, Iwata totally avoids even directly talking about it. There isn't even a maybe. He likely acknowledged the question, and was done with the subject.

If I recall Mother 3 is a nightmare as far as the United states copyright system is concerned which is why its never come over.
I doubt its actually coming stateside but if it was I'd either like all 3 on a cart as full retail 3ds release. Or for them just to make them all available via eshop.

Don't get your hopes up though. It seems he just acknowledged some people want it, they've always know that.

If it is indeed true, I'm afraid a stateside release will be tougher than expected.

No that was why Mother 2/Earthbound SNES hasn't appeared on Virtual Console.

Mother 3 GBA reason was the GBA was in it's last years and they didn't see it doing well.

IF it ever gets localised I can see it being either remade or just put on the eShop.

For Mother 3, a eshop release today would make more sence than a retail release back in 06. It is one of those ideas that you are certain will sell but going by the evidence how you can jump to the idea of Mother 3 headed to the states.

Aw, this got my hopes hope. More than a confirmation, this is "leaving the possibility" of it happening - which was clear since ages.

The only chance of it coming stateside would be a Mother Collection for 3DS, which won't happen because of massive copyright issues with almost half of the content in Earthbound/Mother2.

...that, or Mother 1, Mother 2 and Mother 3 coming separately to the eShop, which would be also a plausible option. Actually far the best one for us (at least for M1 and M3).

He just laughed at the question, never gave an indication one way or another. Don't let this get your hopes up in anyway.

Nintendo has stated that the only GBA games to come to the 3DS VC are the ones that the Ambassadors got (and only for ambassadors at that). Of course this could change, but based on everything we know I'm not holding my breath. However, if more gba games ever do see the light of day on the VC and/or they start to released ambassador games to the general public, then yes, I could see it receiving a release on the 3DS VC.

When it was mentioned, they said they had no plans to release them except to Ambassadors. "No plans" doesn't mean "never".

That is precisely why I kind of wished I kept my 3DS, so I could get those free Virtual Console games. But since I can't 3D effects, I sold it, so I digress. But for some asinine reason, Nintendo doesn't want to release more GBA VC games, which doesn't make sense form a sales standpoint. If they chose to release Snes, NES, GBA games (including Mother 3), maybe then the 3DS would be appealing with someone like me who has a visual impairment. But again. nothing will ever convince me to buy the 3DS a second time.

It would be a nice thing to have. If the quality of translation is as good or even better than Tomato's translation

It would be nice, but I don't think it will happen. (Because it's a Mother title, and the GBA is pretty much dead.)

Although...having a physical copy would be nice.

Also, Tomato's translation is very very good, and I would love to play it again. (*searches for my EZ-Flash IV and flashcart combo*)
