I appear to have Banner Bricked my Wii with a dodgy WAD and have no preloader installed, i have managed to get to the recovery console using the savemiifrii trick with a GC controller but dont have a chip installed so i need a game i can rent with 4.0 on it. (apparently this will install 4.0 for me correct me if i'm wron g)

    Any help greatly appreciated!

    you want a 4.0 upgrade because you're in 3.4?
You can make your own: take an iso and replace the sysetmmenu update with the 4.0 one using Wiiscrubber. To get the 4.0 systemmenu.wad use NUS downloader

I get the Health and safty Message asking me to press A, i press A and then get a black screen with no further progress. Im on 3.4 at the moment. Didnt think i could load a custom disk because i dont have a mod chip to read the disks

If it is indeed a banner brick you dont want to update your Wii

Heres a little guide i've ran across for 3.4 and a banner brick no clue if it actually works but feel free to try

    yep thats a banner brick
updating wont help you. You need to uninstall the wad somehow

edit: can you enter maintenance mode (hold + and - before pressing A) ?

    Big misunderstanding here

My original post said: I'm not sure if its a banner brick, use an update
After short research I changed it to: Yep its a banner brick, use an update
Now I forgot to change the other part, so changed it again [IMG]

Ok thanks guys look like my only option is to get a mod chip and autoboot a wad manager to remove the dodgy wad

Try backup disc trick, but you need a chip. It's mainly,

    1. Get twilight hack save to your wii using backup disc
    2. Boot a autoboot patched zelda
    3. Run wad manager or anytitle deleter to get rid of the offending wad

First of all, you need a modchip to boot modified discs, if you had a full ios replacement pack (they came in various names) you may do without a chip...

Can't locate but there are a few threads about the subject, search hint : backup disc

ps: There is no update (to 4.0) that currently fixes crap installation of wads/themes or whatever though it doesn't mean there won't be in the future... Say if 4.1 contained such a fix (I don't think it will) it would take at least 6-8 months for the games to contain such an update...
