As much as having the PS3 out on time will be good for competition I just can't help but hate Sony as a company. So if the PS3 is delayed till next year I'd be the first to laugh. $999, jesus just make it cost one more dollar and it'll cost a grand, they're nuts.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3
No change in launch date for Japan and North America

London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.

Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.

The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.

The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.

And my local EB Games just put up posters for the PS3 with Nov 17th printed on them last week. Lol, they're not going to be happy.

if the Wii comes out in europe by the end of 2006 (as they're saying) and it sells, well this european delay of the ps3 could be really a shoot in the foot for sony.

Europe is a key territory for Sony - they have a much bigger share of the market over here, so I'm suprised they've delayed it.
But then again... it's not too supprising 'cos Sony is in a big mess atm.
Regardless the delay is pretty bad news, several places had been taking preorders since the £425 pricepoint was announced and whilst other gaming machines have sucessfully launched in the Easter holidays, parents might find it hard to cough up a massive £425 for an Easter present. Not only that but Toshiba launch their HD-DVD player in Europe in November giving HD a big head start over Blu-Ray.

Saying that though, if anyone thinks Sony will crumble this generation though then they're wrong. The PS3 will be sucessful... how sucessful we'll just have to see.

This is a big opportunity for Nintendo in that market. I think most people that REALLY wanted an XB360 already got one, and Nintendo will be the only one with a new console available for Christmas.
