Hacking Backup Loader Trouble

Hello,
When I plug in my external (Seagate FreeAgent 320 gb) the wii says no usb device found. Do I need something on it for it to recognize it? I think i have the backup loader installed correctly. I used Brewii to install the homebrew channel and loader. What am I doing wrong?
