Hardware Backup GBA saves with Action Replay DSi? Best Method?

I saw that with an Action Replay DSi (or compatible flash cart) you can use GBA Backup Tool to grab saves off of GBA cartridges.

Is this the best method to do this or are there better ways?

Do I need a specific revision of the Action Replay DSi? I have heard some do not have the sd slot.

Is a flash cart better to use instead of an Action Replay DSi and if so what one will work best with the GBA Backup tool?

Does my DS Lite need to be modded or is everything run off of the AR / Flash cart?
