If you have SafeArm9Installer then you probably have A9LH. What happens when you hold Select on boot? Does it tell you what version Luma you have? You will probably want to follow https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s, but before you update, open the config menu (Select on boot) and make sure boot emuNAND is turned off, and show version string is turned on. Press Start to save and go to System Settings. Make sure the version string starts with "Sys". Then you can update. You will have to set up Gateway again: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/
That's what I would do (have done, actually). However, OP and his/her kids probably don't really need the latest Luma features that require B9S, so they could just update...

You can if you want, as long as you're on 7.0.5. The beginning of the a9lh-to-b9s page says how to update to 7.0.5. If another firmware version is released there's a chance that you could get a black screen after updating to it, and will have to follow the guide while having a black screen, whereas B9S you'll be able to just replace your boot.firm.

True, it is always the better option. I was just saying that because there's little immediate benefit, it may not ever be necessary, and it would make things simpler for OP. If 7.0.5 is a requirement, though, then they'd probably be better off updating the whole thing anyway. Gateway may be the trickiest part.
