AYANEO 3, a modular handheld gaming PC, crowdfunding campaign launched

Late last year, AYANEO revealed their next-gen handheld gaming PC, the AYANEO 3. The company has today launched the product, and, as expected, they are doing so initially via a crowdfunding campaign. As usual, caution is advised with such campaigns. Accompanying the launch were more details about the device and a new trailer:

As a next-gen device, the AYANEO 3 packs better specs than AYANEO's former models and comes with an interesting feature: modular face buttons. AYANEO has revealed two standard modules (conductive buttons and micro-action buttons), a touchpad module and a fighting module. The full module kit retails at an early bird price of $99. The mechanism looks similar to the magnetic modules of Thrustmaster's eSWAP controllers, and they allow for a range of gameplay styles.

Early bird pricing for the AYANEO 3 starts at $699 for the AMD 8840U model and $1299 for the AMD AI 9 HX 370 model. However, details of the battery capacity seems to be lacking and this is a major factor for handheld devices.

The AYANEO 3 crowdfunding campaign is now live and has already exceeded its goal. Shipping is expected to start in April.

Oh boy. I mean, technically they're right, but I'd understand "modular" as "You can upgrade the hardware and don't have to bother with their next product that is gonna be announced two weeks from now."

Especially the 64GB RAM models seem a bit overkill considering the only performance upgrade you could potentially go for is an eGPU... and those have their own drawbacks.

I hope they will integrate the idea of the modular buttons into low to mid end Handheld PCs.The possibility to have a decent D-Pad or Analog Stick in the main upper position is good.
I guess games will play really good on this device but it simply is too expensive to be really interesting for most people.

Can this company not go like... 5 months without announcing another handheld?

Ok so i appreciate the idea of a new handheld with changable Controller Options. But why are these prices so damn high?
Thats high as a complete gaming pc. Now i understand why the switch is so popular.
It lacks power, but gets the job done for a few bucks. Sure it does not play pc games but you get the point. Gaming on the go should not cost an arm or leg.

And they say that the Handheld PC market hasn't been overcrowded yet, and you can get a good MiniPC from Minisfourm for less

So they're just going to pretend the Switch doesn't exist. That is by definition a modular handheld. This is effectively just JoyCons minus the ability to use the controllers separately from the handheld and they're marketing that like it's a good thing. It's a dumb gimmick.
