I (like most people here) have hyped myself up for CFW but then got thinking about what I'd actually be able to do with it if (hypothetically) we got it today. I didn't follow the 3DS or Wii U hacking scene until quite some time later, so when I finally used the exploits, I was greeted with a whole bunch of things I could do which devs had developed over time.
So this might sound like a dumb question to some but once Atmosphere is released, what are we expecting to be able to do with it from the get go? I guess the one thing that comes to mind is being able to install the .nro homebrew and launch them directly from the home screen. But besides that, I don't really know what to expect.
The homebrew part is significant as right now only those on 3.0.0 can do it. From there, it will be the usual game modding, save editing, emulators etc whilst still being able to play latest games on updated emunand.

I'm judging between updating to 5.0.1 to participate in the upcoming Splatfests and staying on 4.1 for the upcoming CFW.

Tough decision. Do we have any confirmed entry points for 5.0.0?
It sounds like the hardware exploit so should be safe on 5.0.1 just means it might be a little more complicated but not impossible.

it isn't the CFW that requires an emuNAND or not. Luma can be used with one or without, and it can be used with menuhax (where you can't update unless it is emuNAND) or B9S (where you can update without emuNAND)

then why does every guide wonder off and tell you to install emunand in the middle of them? Temp members must not know how to organize things.

Emunand is kinda like adding a fuse in the right place on the hardware, it's always better to have one... Fuses saved my Logitech Z5500 speakers twice since 2 blown away and always when electricity went off and the comes with spikes... If they didn't have a fuse they would probably be dead by now...

It's like a fail safe specially if you like to test everything and something damages data it will damage\corrupt on the emunand leaving the nand chip untouched... And less writes\reads will also make the memory chip lasting a lot of time so you won't have a dead switch so soon because of nand chip failing or corrupting...

If you remove nand chip from Switch the console will play dead like some of those dead switches that won't turn on... Those with bootloop might also be able to fix the console if the TX chip have recovery flash, but no idea on that...

I won't lie: I want to run backups and retroarch.

So do most, but both of those things won't come with Atmosphere. They'll need to be developed by someone else. In the case of RetroArch, the Liberto team will need to put out an official release.
I personally have a Switch on 3.0 so I can already use homebrew via the launcher. So for me, I'd prefer to see a new RetroArch release before CFW.

Unless you are reading a guide from like before early 2017, the community has stopped using emuNAND at all in the install process for at least a year now.
a9lh may have caused bricked with emuNAND solely because we created an emuNAND, downgraded it to 2.1, then reflashed the emuNAND to sysNAND. Which we very likely won't be doing on switch because it has efuse downgrade protection.

But any modern guide for 3ds hacking will not even use emuNAND or a9lh at all as it's much more efficient to just install b9s and use sysNAND directly due to b9s being great brick protection, to the point of being able to unbrick already-bricked systems.
Oh, and b9s was developed in part by SciresM, who is also one of the main people working on atmosphere

Earlier than that, I installed way back with early A9LH days and the guide didn't say anything about emuNAND. The only time I remember that being a requirement was with the browserhax/menuhax based stuff, like GateWay and RXTools

A majority of the a9lh life it was installed by creating emuNAND, downgrading emuNAND, patching it to work properly (n3ds), and then flashing emuNAND to sysNAND.
Though after the install process you got rid of the emuNAND because it was pointless.

I distinctly remember just downgrading SysNAND, but that may be because I had an o3DS and could just use the straightforward method
