Are you willing to consume lab grown meat and dairy?

I'm not particularily thrilled as genetically modified food is, heck already banned in Europe mostly (don't quote me on that or take my word for it, someone please confirm)... also what is the freaking point we already have animals (cept for okay lilith do have a good point there)

Lab grown meat will probably catch on better if they don't try to make fake cows or chickens. Since it's something made, make it something exotic How about: Would you eat a bucket of Kentucky fried Dodo? Would you be interested in a T-Rex burger?

To be honest, I don't have anything about artificially creating food, as long as the quality of the food is proven and studied.

I mean, artificial... is everything that makes us humans. Starting with tools, art, video games, space ships... and better improved food.
Why would we not analyse how to improve our food if we are capable of it?
That kind of notion seems anti-progress to me... shall we go back to the caves?

Also, the only meat that is not artificial is the meat that still is attached to it's owner.
The moment you salt it, cook it, or let it undergo any similar chemical transformation, it's not in its natural state anymore.
And that doesn't make it bad at all! I prefer my steak rare, not raw!

This isn't genetically modified. That is a different matter entirely, though I suppose you could combine the two in the future (genetically engineer the meat to be even more nutritious or something). Also while it is incredibly strict the EU (note the same thing as Europe but different discussion there) does allow a few products and might be said to not be opposed on principle. I will skip the GMO debate though.

The point?
I am presuming costs will likely get it lower than animal grown eventually (the processes required are not that drastic, scale fantastically and have nice yields beyond anything a farm might manage if done properly, and right now most processes are not done on industrial scales), the quality can be controlled more (both eating and content wise -- there will not be a layer of fat or gristle there unless you want one sort of thing, to say nothing of not having to have animals raised on a farm and do the whole slaughterhouse business which is rather prone to contamination and quality concerns), can be conducted in places that are otherwise tricky to raise animals in (be it because of environment or cost of land), probably some tweaks to make things even more tasty, the option to have a lamb steak the size of a parking space if you want (ask butchers about stories of people wanting large lambs), some would probably wonder about ethical issues if killing animals for food or raising them in factory farm conditions troubles them (no animal would presumably suffer as part of this if it was a sample from a live animal that carried on running around afterwards) and we can probably also ponder food supply in general; a lab can be made more or less anywhere, today imports and farms still represent a key component such that distribution of things there troubles states and is a relatively easy means of messing with them.

You do have a really good point there @FAST6191, yeah that is a good distinction actually, since it’s not genetically modified, well then tbh I guess I don’t have much of an objection to it... would definitely be useful in space especially if you could grow it sustainably and quickly

As long as it has the same properties as the natural version, I don't see why not.. steak is steak regardless of source if it's identical.

I'm in for it as long as quality standards are met and proper research on safety of such food is done. I mean, it's nicer for animals, it's more economically viable, and it potentially eliminates tons of sanitary violations common in food producing (seriously, if you think "eww, lab meat is gross", you should see how the meat you eat is actually done, you'll be grossed out for your life).

Yes. On the one exception that it is indistinguishable from the real thing. I don't just mean the flavor, either. The texture, the weight, the juicy first bite. If they can get it perfect and cost effective? Yes.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
He couldn't eat until after his MRI, when he had a bomb pop.
