Well, the most popular idea for online multiplayer being removed is due to the lag when connecting to uk/us servers, and that the solution (EA maintaining local servers) isn't feasable.

So the only issue using an imported copy is that. You'll certainly be able to play people online, but depending on the complexity of the game (level size, number of players, amount of action going on etc) the lag may effect the online experience to such a point that it's not worth it.

I'd recommend hanging back a bit, for another Aussie else to take the plunge and import a copy. See what they have to say. That said if you were planning to 'aquire' via other methods by all means do so and let us all know how you find it

Works fine, including online play.
