ROM Hack Are hourly Luma builds required for SaltySD?

In OPERATIONiDROiD's Sun and Moon randomization tutorial (21:13), he claims you need to update Luma3DS to the latest hourly build for the modified game to work. I don't understand why this would be the case as hourly builds can be unstable and are meant for devs (KunoichiZ's responses,

Not anymore, as code patching has been a feature in the stable Luma releases for quite some time now. Video guides can become extremely outdated within a matter of days, it's better to use written guides as they can be updated much easier... Not to mention, if Luma 8.0 or 8.1 works on your 3DS, you're fine...
