Or do they play just like when you insert a DS card into a 3DS?

That is totally dependent on the speed of your micro SD card; a faster micro SD card provides good gameplay, while slower micro SD cards usually causes lag/choppiness. On most flashcarts, slower micro SD cards usually causes some problems (mostly white screens) because micro SD cards obviously weren't built to work on flashcarts.

So a SDHC card with fast transfer rate will be just like running normal DS cards? :I

I actually found non-SCHD cards were better for games which experience some choppiness, like Animal Crossing.

This depends on the flashcard, the speed of the SD card and on the game itself.

So basically don't cheap out on the MicroSD. Buy a class-4 or class-6 one, and don't get it from some chinese site or ebay. Buy it retail.

Class is the write speed, not the read speed.

One could safely assume the 2 are roughly proportionately linked, which they are.
