Maybe a silly question, but it is possible to make Retroarch Wii run a patched arcade rom?

I use Retroarch 1.7.6 to run Super Street Fighter II Turbo (ssf2t, CPS2 core).
It works perfectly, but unfortunately, this game version has the infamous difficulty bug (the game is stuck to Very Hard, whatever the difficulty set in the service mode).

There's a recent patch to fix this difficulty bug, but when applied, the rom does not run anymore in Retroarch Wii.
It works on MameUI though, with a warning that the checksum of the patched file is not the expected one, obviously.

(I know I can use the japanese rom instead -ssf2xj-, which doesn't have the bug, and works perfectly on Retroarch Wii, except dialogues and endings are in japanese).

Thanks.

This could be a fix for your question. I used only Wiimote for this but Wiimote/Nunchuk, GameCube, Classic Controller will most likely work better...

Load CPS2 core and boot SSF2T, Insert coins and press start. Once character select screen comes up press Home on Wiimote, now select Quick Menu, now scroll to and select Controls...

Now scroll down to Auto: B (btn) [User 1] and use the D-Pad (Left or Right) until you find Diagnostics, Now press Home on Wiimote to return to game.

Press the B button on your Wiimote and you will be in Test Menu, select 3 System Configuration with A button, here you can change Game Difficulty. Scroll to Exit and press (+), now scroll to Exit and press A.

Now you should be at Title screen, simply press Home again on Wiimote and change Auto B User 1 Button back to Medium Punch.

Start a game and hopefully difficulty setting change has been applied.

I would also like this, as there's numerous romhacks like Mortal Kombat 2 Plus and Street Fighter 2 Mix that would be incredible to play on the Wii but there's no way of loading them.

Haha, you read too fast.

The "World" and "US" rom of SSF2T is bugged (since its release back in 1994), as the difficulty setting in the service menu has no effect. Even if set to 01-Easy, the difficulty is stuck on Very Hard.

For years, the workaround was to use the "Japan" rom (ssf2xj) which does not have this bug.

A patch was recently released that fixes the bug:

"SUPER STREET FIGHTER II TURBO difficulty fix.

When set to any non-Japan region, the games AI CPU will always play at an extremely fierce difficulty regardless of what setting the player selects in the machine options. This patch allows you to change the AI level for Super Street Fighter II Turbo (World [940223] and USA [940323] region only) to match that of the Japanese region.

You will need to patch the file sfxe.03c which is located inside ssf2t.zip rom. CRC when playing should state 2b8989d5."

But once patched, Retroarch Wii doesn't load the game anymore. :(

It works on MameUI though, with a warning that the patched file has not the expected CRC.

I think that's what prevent Retroarch Wii to load the rom, unfortunately. There's surely some check of the file integrity.

that would be incredible to play on the Wii but there's no way of loading them.

Definitely.

Definitely.

In later versions of Retroarch FBA there's an option to "load patched roms" it would be great if this was backported to retroarch wii, or just have the file integrity check completely disabled as there's no reason for it

EDIT: I also *distinctly* remember earlier versions of retroarch wii fb alpha would play patched roms fine, and I know this because I used this to enable unibios before it was intergrated properly in the menu and also to play Metal Slug 2 turbo when that romhack was released, this would have been around circa 2015 so if anyone can check early versions of retroarch wii from around that time and see if it works

This is why i always played Super X only instead of Super Turbo.

Hell i was one of those lucky bastards that got a Japanese SSF2 PCB inside a US cart back in teh late 90s (which sadly i don't own anymore)

Which version of HEXACO was the most up to date?
https://www.mediafire.com/file/yz7cum3anw2c0w3/SS-Hexaeco_2024_Complete_Mod.7z/file

If you haven't downloaded this already, it is the most complete "up to date" working HEXAECO pack you will find.

@Ouaz @Disorarara @MeXen @SaulFabre

I looked into this a little deeper and patched the FBA roms myself. You are correct FBA will not play them through RA or SS-Hecaeco...No Dice!!!

I tested the patched roms through the Hexaeco FBNEO core also and black screen return to system menu...HOWEVER...

I also patched the FBNEO roms and :) yes they are booting and playing 100%!!! Although you will have to test because i am not familiar with the difficulty..

Below are my Arcade compatibility lists if you want to take a look...FBNEO is included which i tested some months back with decent results. I did test some CPS2 games with no luck but CPS1 and Cave went pretty well, i was testing mostly problem games from the FBA romset...

Now with this revelation, i am forced to test more FBNEO roms...there may be others working i was not aware of. That FBNEO core is included in the above link if you are interested.

Wow, thank you, I'll test this asap later today.

If the patched ssft2 (FBneo romset) did run, it's all good.

If it works, I'll use Hexaeco with FBNeo core for patched roms only, as I kept on with RA 1.7.6 which is pretty stable for CPS1-2 and NeoGeo games (with Unibios).

Thanks again.

Sorry to say but i installed it, put it all in the correct folders, deleted the cfg files of root retroarch folder, HEXAECO DOES NOT RUN!, NO BULLSHIT!
It does run, quite efficiently in fact.

The root "retroarch" folder is "Completely Separate" from the HEXAECO "private" folder install.

You have made mistakes installing a very straight forward "Drag & Drop" install.

Try again, if you still have issues, PM me and i will help you straighten things out.

Pretty sure we have 2 active accounts under different names that are the same person. I could possibly be wrong but i don't think so. Sooner rather than later, one will disappear unless the guy just cannot help himself from being a fool.

Until then, happy gaming to all.

I patched the FBNEO rom of ssf2t (both difficulty and color fix patches), used the FBNEO core provided by RunningSnakes directly in RA 1.7.6, and...

It works!

At first, I tested it with RA-Hexaeco, and as it worked, I thought "let's try the core in 1.7.6, who knows..." :P

At my big surprise, it worked too (I thought cores have to be compiled specifically for given retroarch versions... Maybe I missed something).

Whatever, thank you again for the help!

Can you try with Street Fighter 2 Mix? Or Street Fighter Zero Mix

- Street Fighter 2 Mix works (using sf2ce.zip, not sf2mix.zip, as the zip content is not the same)
- Street Fighter 2 Turbo New Legacy 0.9 works too ! (using the Mame rom, not the FBNEO one)

As long as the .zip file has the same name and the same file content than the original rom (number of files and file names inside the zip, but patched obviously), it seems any patched roms works. \o/

If you downloaded the Hexaeco pack, you may have noticed i included my bezels/overlays for each core. FBNEO didn't have its own true bezel so i decided to whip one up, nothing special but not too shabby either.

I also finished testing the FBNEO core and many more games are working (63 total, 1 arcade, 12 cave, 27 cps1, 23 cps2) than i previously thought. Forgotten Worlds can finally be played with correct controls although you will have to adjust input for the fire button.
I have updated the FBNEO compatibility list text.

I've sent you a PM for your setup of FBNeo and these games you have. @Ouaz

Hello,

glad to hear that a FBNeo core is coming! Finally the chance to save hiscores for cps1 may be possible!
A FBNeo core? is it based on the real FBNeo or is just the modified version of FBalpha with name change? what would be the differences around? more compatibility and performance?

FBNeo is a yet another improvement fork of the original FBAlpha, with improved compatibility and a few more games and hacks added to bootable roms.
http://github.com/finalburnneo/FBNeo for more info.

But it's more likely that this new core has much less drivers (games) that are supported, since FBNeo doesn't fit on the Wii's tiny RAM (MEM1 of 24MB+MEM2 of 64 MB).

I remember the only attempt to bring FBNeo on Wii (obviously much shrinked and with few supported games) was on some last versions of RA-HEXAeco (correct me if i'm wrong).
