Remember the clock that apple used for their iOS 6? Well most of you know that a while back a company named "Swiss Rail" starting lobbying complaints that Apple stole their design. You would think that after all the frivilous law suits Apple has been though will "rounded rectangles" and "similar icon design" that they would know enough not to blatantly copy the design of a well known clock.

The price they payed was 21 Million, about 10 cents per iPhone 5 that shipped with iOS 6.

Wow Apple. Wow.

You read about the lawsuit/compaint being filed - this is the result of said lawsuit/complaint. Apple simply paid the company off to avoid lenghty proceedings.

But $21 million is a drop in the bucket to them compared to the profits they're banking off the iPhone that shipped with it. So really this is sadly not as much of a punishment as we'd want.

But $21 million is a drop in the bucket to them compared to the profits they're banking off the iPhone that shipped with it. So really this is sadly not as much of a punishment as we'd want.

That's not the issue though - it sets a precedence, in a way.

Now companies big or small will look for something that looks vaguely familiar to their products in Apple products and they are more likely to win if they present this case as an example.

They waved Swiss Rail off with a paltry $21 million. Apple is worth about $508 billion. That amounts to 0.004% of their entire net worth--four thousandths of one percent. If a beggar on the street asked you for money and you had $10,000 in a briefcase, it would be like giving him 4 cents and telling him to fuck off on his merry little way.

Apple didn't even notice that it lost $21 million.

So why do we want to punish Apple? For making really good products that people want to buy. Would it make you happy if Apple made poor products that no one wanted?
