Yet another battle royale game lands on mobile platform and this time it's Apex Legends. Aptly titled Apex Legends Mobile, the title is said to have been "specially designed for touchscreens, with streamlined controls and thoughtful optimizations" that still remains true to the original. The game will roll out with a small series of beta tests in India and the Philippines beginning Spring 2021 on Android devices; with plans to add iOS support and expanding to other regions down the line.

Being designed specially for mobile platforms, Apex Legends Mobile won’t feature cross-play with the console or PC versions of Apex Legends. The mobile version will also be free-to-play and include its own Battle Passes, cosmetic items, and unlockables different than the PC and console versions.

It's about damn time we see something on it.. I'm curious about its performance. Sucks it'll be tied to a few specific regions for the time being.

They announced this a long time ago now, its nice to see they're actually releasing it.
If fortnite on the switch is any comparison, the performance should be pretty good on phones.

That's.. Weird. I play the game on Switch and it really strains the console there, so imagining it on more underpowered phones.. it's a nightmare waiting to happen. But my love for the game will probably pressure me to try it, hate it, and play something else.

Modern smartphones are beefier than the Switch. The flagships beat it outright even if the Tegra X1 was running at stock speeds, and Nintendo further underclocked it.

Yeah, but a lot of the people playing this aren't going to have relevant phones. Most people will be using budget recent releases, or older flagships.

I get annoyed just playing shooters on consoles, don't know how anybody can put up with them or take them seriously on mobile.

By modern I mean even last gen flagships and current budget options. The Tegra X1 pushes around 512GFLOPS FP32 at stock speeds and Nintendo nerfed it by around 25% when docked, and a further 25% when undocked, give or take. Smartphones have gone a long way since the Switch was released, I don't anticipate any major issues since the target audience usually games on the latest and greatest handsets. The same applies to Fortnite Mobile and PUBG Mobile, same engine et all.

EDIT: Correction - apparently Apex Legends runs on the Source engine, of all things. I would've never guessed.

I read that as "Apex Legends movie revealed" at first for some odd reason. Must've been reading it fast. Don't know much about the game regardless.

Apex runs decently on Switch too, like other Panic Button ported stuff it's a little blurry (but playable) right now because they focus on actually getting the games running and then improve the visuals later. Apex isn't really my cup of tea, but it's solid enough on Switch. I just wish Titanfall 2 had crossplsy and a Switch port.

The point I was making is that Fortnite runs "ok" on the switch but on modern phones it runs flawlessly. If the same logic is put onto the Switch version of Apex, Apex would run very well on a phone.
I would say that the reason they are making it a completely separate version is the amount of assets and the file size. No one is going to keep a 20 gb game on their phone

From what I can see in the Asian Market sentiment, creating a high-end Mobile Game isn't a bad strategy.

Case in point, Genshin Impact will not work for the majority of Smartphones available in 2021, but since it's marketed as a Mobile Game and is enjoyable for those that play it on said platform, more people are buying higher-end Smartphones just to play the Game or planning their next hardware upgrade based on what Mobile CPU and GPU can run it.

But whether Apex has that kind of clout is another story, especially with the Asian Market.
Still, the strategy is sound enough and so is testing certain countries that are emerging Mobile Gaming Markets.
