I have it. It's probably one of the best new games I've played in a long time.

I was disappointed by the way the game is set out. I expected it to be pretty much 2 separate games; Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic. 7 Levels, 2 acts per level. It's actually 1 game. Act1 of each level is classic sonic, and Act2 is modern sonic. Thus firstly the game is only half as big as I expected, and secondly you can't progress through the game without playing both the classic and modern acts of each level.

Luckily, then, I enjoyed the modern Sonic a lot more than I thought I would have done. But you don't really feel like you're playing one solid game, constantly changing from one type of play to another. I also feel Sonic has kind of lost its way with the way the game progresses, and revisiting existing levels. Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles you progressed through zones in a linear fashion, with no way to go back and revisit other zones. To me this has always been the 'sonic' way. Mario introduced the concept of maps in SMB3 and since then there's always been a way to naturally backtrack and play previous levels again. In sonic generations (as in Sonic 4) you have a menu where you just select the level you want to play.

There are sh*tty story scenes between the levels but thankfully, unlike some other Sega games, you can skip past them.

Despite all the negativity in this post, I have to stress that I actually really enjoy playing Generations. I often pick it up and smash through a level or two. It has pick-up-and play appeal. And when I was stuck on levels I found myself picking up the 3DS and giving it another go a lot more frequently than any other game I got stuck on.

The 3D is great. As it's essentially a 2D playing field, the 3D simply enhances the visual experience. It doesn't get in the way. You're not negotiating a 3D area so you don't find your eyes naturally trying to look around objects thus loosing the 3D perspective. It's firmly 'looking in on a scene' 3D with no gimmiky pop-out effects. Really pleasing on the eye.

It is the most played game on my 3DS by a long shot. That will probably change when I get Mario Kart next month, but I can imagine even in years to come I'll obsessionally pop in Generations and have a quick blast through Green Hill, Casino Night, Mushroom Hill, or Emerald Coast. And after that quick blast, I might just play another couple of levels!

Online is OK. I've played it a few times (only ever won once though!) It's a race through the level a bit like in Sonic 2, only in this one its strictly first past the post - no accounting for rings or items.

One final disappointment... no chorus of "SEGA" on launch :( Especially disappointing as they have it in all the trailers for the game
