My laptop has been running kind of hot lately so I decided to get a USB powered cooling fan but I have never purchased one before so I wouldn't know where to start or what brand to get. I have a 15.4'' inch laptop and I actually want to be able to use it on my lap so if at all possible I would like a fan that can connect to the laptop so it doesn't fall off. I don't even know if fans are made like that, though, because as I said I have never purchased one. Thanks in advance

First off, find out which parts in your laptop generate the most heat. Some laptop coolers have 2 fans on either side, while others have 1 big fan in the middle. Usually, one will do the job better than the other depending on your laptop. Any brand will work fine.

But if you really want to get fancy then there are some expensive coolers you can look into:

a laptop shouldn't need external cooling fans.

have you tried cleaning it? just shove the vacuum cleaner up to the exhaust and input grills to try and get the most of the dust out

regardless of it being clean and free from dirt and dust they can still get quite warm on the bottom moreso if you use it for gaming or use the cd/dvd/burner combi drive a lot they soon heat up

Deal Extreme had some in their computer section for around $17-$20

just so you know what they are .. they are usually a flat or sloped base with anything upto 3 fans built into them that you sit your laptop on and they draw power from usb but this of course uses some of your valuable battery power just keep the power lead to hand if your using it a lot

I should also point out that given that they are powered from the laptops internal power supply, they increase the load on it and therefore the heat it puts out....

Sorry to bring this thread back up after a few days but I have been looking around a lot and it looks like I am not going to have to spend nearly as much as I thought. I have narrowed it down to these 4 well-priced ones and I just need someone's opinion on which one they think we work the best and be the most comfortable when actually used on a lap.

I am leaning towards the first or second one.
