The Internet was a mistake, plain and simple

The takeaway is the government and corporate media were better suited to provide media and information

There was at least incentive for a stable society behind the decisions of the above, due to wanting a robust safe society/economy for business

The Internet is full of wackos and foreign agents spreading rampant misinformation unabated which have had disastrous effects in the west

China's total ownership of all media and news information will prove to be decisive - as long as they can survive past 1. Our economic attacks and their current slowdown and 2. Their huge demographic crisis looming

I can tell you that the old days of the internet were grand. Message boards, everyone's feeble attempt at a website, the corporate websites no one visited, it was perfect as-is. Communication was scattered across AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, etc, so people only interacted with whomever they chose. No social media to keep up with, just text and an avatar.

The Wikipedia, my goodness. People treat it like the information center of the internet. "Mega Man, use your strong sense of justice to end the Edit Wars and win history!" Victory isn't the end because someone might come in and change history AGAIN, igniting the Revert Wars!

The old internet wasn't perfect but at least it wasn't the trash it is today. Also it was a nice form of escapism from real life shit and most people were separating their internet time from real life. Now? OOOOOOOOOOOH BOY!

Remember when teachers were advising students to not use Wikipedia as a valid source for school studies? Ironic how teachers now treat Wikipedia as the most trustful source despite its far left bias.

i just found out about the mrbeast situation what gacha heat is the existance of vore and also logan paul etc anyway imma go comtamplate where humanity went wrong
Mr Beast is only one of the countless cases of internet influencers (especially the ones popular to kids) being child groomers. It's a golden rule.

This. The internet was this new thing, and my generation picked it up fast. HTML was so simple and intuitive, and it was fun to experiment.

Remember when you could view the page source, and it wasn't buried in javascript and a million DIV's? Back then, if someone had an effect you liked, you could read the HTML and track it down.

Back then, your passion dictated what your webpage was about. Now, social media is the host, and you're the focus.

More stuff is coming back to me. I miss how there were entire websites dedicated to webpage effects.

Change the cursor to anything you want, change the color of the scroll bars to suit your page's color palette, make a message box appear upon right clicking (ineffective at protecting the HTML), disable the horizontal scroll bar entirely, play a MIDI in the background, etc. The old internet had it all.

Navigating the internet was so different as well, it was like finding your way via landmarks rather than a map. Google didn't have a stranglehold on search and there weren't so many centralised places for content. You'd find places through word of mouth. Good days, even if things are easier and more convenient now.

Ah, that's right! Nowadays, you type a news headline into a search engine, you get about twelve results that loop back around indefinitely.

In the old days, a search could bring you to the smaller websites pretty readily. As a website owner, you'd put tons of meta tags on every individual page in the hopes that it would skew the results in your favor. That doesn't exist now.

I loved that lots of sites were kind of a hodge-podge of entertainment. Some videos, some flash games, some funny images, maybe a small forum.
