GeexBox will do the trick. It plays most of my avi-files full speed through external USB HDD.

I also noticed that it will recognize windows shares!!
Has anyone tried this? is it fast?

i use mplayer ce because of the reason i use smb for every movie and every soundfile i play on my wii. geexbox needs a usb-lan adapter and doesn't support wifi that's why i don't use it. as soon as geexbox or better said wii linux gets wifi support i'll use both. the reason is mplayer is failing with playing some files which geexbox plays properly and the other way around.
