I was curious if anyone knew the technical reason why the LG 8164B, 8163B, 8162B dvd drives working backing up wii discs. I'm an engineer so call it my inherent need to know why it works. [IMG]

    ps2.au: I don't think so.

If I recall correctly, there are some debug functions in the drives that let you raw dump data segments.

Yes, it's because the RAWDump program was written specifically to use the debug commands available on these drives. It forces the drive to read the contents of the disk even though the disk isn't really recognized.

First of all: The debug commands aren't in the drivers, they are implemented in the drive firmware.

And: no, it is unlikely that only the LG drives have such a debug command. Other drives may have similar commands as well. Problem is that those debug commands differ from model to model and maker to maker as for how they are triggered and the results they produce. Essentially the tool has to be recoded for every model/maker.

That actually makes a lot of sense given that the discs themselves are not designed to be easily read on non-wii dvd drives. ANy idea if tool is open source code? It would be nice to pen the tool up to a wider array of drives.

How did the creator of rawdump know the LG drives had those specific debug codes in their firmware? It's just wierd that he could only write the program to utilize only that drive.

Anyways, my LG drive just got delivered today, I think I'm gonna install it now and check it out.

The extra letter (BK or BB) is the faceplate colour (Black and Beige respectively, I think). It makes no difference.

With the ones that I linked to the GDR-8164BB is beige, the extra b is to show it is beige. The GDR-8164BK is the black one.

It is the same drive, and will work fine for ripping the Wii games.

descrambler is open source - I dont think 'rawdump' is.. the GUI is a vb.net application, msil crap - so use reflector to have a peek at the source for that part of it..you'll find that the actual work is being done with the included dll which isn't dot not crap and you'll need IDA (or whatever) to see what commands are being sent through the scsi-pass-through-interface..again, only for the lg drives already supported.

Since this LG drive can read xbox and wii dvd's is there any chance that the LG drive can work as an replacement drive for wii ? I now it can be used as an replacement drive on xbox so why not ?
But it will require one hell of an modding job to make it fit [IMG]

Because this drive (or a similar one) is used in the xbox, this drive has been researched so well they now can make it read just about anything, even Wii disks. But there's where the story ends. Unlike the xbox, the Wii uses a proprietary controller on its drives. So the quick and painless answer to your question would be:

    No.
