Open office. Even able to open and write word documents (better than word in a lot of cases too).
    http://www.openoffice.org/
Any machines I am responsible for get this over MS office, thus far other than asking to set the default save type to MS Office no complaints.

If you don't need/want to download all of OpenOffice.org, there's Abiword

You could always 'obtain' the software, but if you want to keep it legal open office is the best.

yeah, OpenOffice, I (and my whole school) use it at my school laptop.
It works quite well, i've had a few problems with it though, like i.e i've saved a document, and when i open it the text i've saved is gone.. (note, that've just happened like 2 times in 2 years now.. but still) and some other minor problems,
other than that, it works great..

also.. i can't believe you haven't heard about it ;P or found it when searching for like.. "word free" or something..

A vote for abiword too if open office does not suit your needs, I wrote the EZ5 plus review in it (which ended up small project size).

Looks like a landslide victory for openoffice.

Also installs to a Sandisk Microcruzer flash drive which is mucho handy.

    Another vote for Abiword.

OOo is too bloatware for my tastes, and the suite itself is fairly useless outside of writer.

If you only need to type something, might as well get Abiword

I still use WordPerfect on my old 486-dx33 under dos for typing something fast (Yeah call me stupid, but i grew up with it and i learned WP at school) (ok it's not free)

For free -> wordpad i would say, can do the most basiv stuff, otherwise get openoffice, supports also alot of languages (can't say that from abiword)

For most assignments I would say Wordpad is enough, but when it comes to essays and research papers you really need the extra formatting capability.

Do you not have Microsoft Works? It should be included with every Windows home computer.
I like it a lot better than Word because it's not as bloated and complicated, but it has low compatibility with other formats. Works great if you just want to type a paper and print it out at home.
