I have both. They exactly the same except for the plus has the internal switch (which is easy to get to). They even run the same kernel. If you have a 3ds/2ds, I suggest getting the plus.

It's actually only carts made by the crap team known as the R4i-SDHC/R4iSDHC team that have a timebomb built into their official kernel. These two carts run Wood R4, which does not have a timebomb built into the kernel. If you would like to know the carts to avoid, I made a thread semi-covering this topic

Well I mean, sure the timebomb is a dick move, but the R4 GOLD Pro is one of the cheapest cards (especially for ntrboot), and apparently there's a modified version of YSMenu which can be used as a primary kernel to bypass the timebomb

There are more, they just aren't commonly found nowadays. Only a few of the teams are still producing carts I believe.

Oh hey, I didn't know you could even change the FW on a GOLD Pro, now I might actually try it myself! Which one would you recommend?

There is the r4i-gold.eu, which is just the R4i-SDHC team again. Pretty much everyone is either r4ids or R4i-SDHC at this point.

There's really nothing gained from converting the R4i Gold Pro to an R4i-SDHC, outside of gaining access to the WiFi feature. Personally I won't recommend any of them for the reasons stated in my thread, that being that they are all literally the same cart. But if you really don't mind that fact, then I suggest the R4i Gold Pro (url: r4isdhc.com) give them as little money as possible. Otherwise I suggest the R4i Gold Plus from r4ids.cn.
Edit: modchipsdirect doesn't seem like the best site to buy a flashcart from, they aren't even using HTTPS. Googling them seems to really bring a mixed bag of results as when it comes to customer feedback. I personally suggest going with nds-card.com, they are selling it for a lot cheaper and are actually a trusted site.

I already have a GOLD Pro because it was the cheapest one for ntrboot. Also what do you mean with "outside of gaming access to the WiFi feature"? Does it mean the gold pro can't use WiFi functions with the stock firmware? Sorry I don't know much details about NDS flashcarts

I meant "gaining," but my phone autocorrected that to gaming and I didn't notice. The R4i-SDHC allowed for WiFi updates, which used to be useful when they still updated their kernel.

Ah ok, well if wouldn't have been really useful for me anyway since it's easy to update kernels manually. Although if the R4i-SHDC FW has RTS it might make some sense (technically R4SDHC cards have """RTS""" too, but it doesn't work at all since both when saving and restoring the game just crashes :P)

Make sure your roms are in an folder named "games," that should stop the crashing.

Really? Is ir that stupid of a problem? My games are in a folder called "Giochi" (which is "games" translated in my language because why not)
I had mine in a folder called "NDS" before and it kept crashing. After I changed the name to "games" it no longer crashed.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.

    nvm it does support mine
